View Full Version : First hack out from RS

For those of you who read my posts, you will already know that I have not been able to go on a hack from my RS because I am not of a high enough grade, but I have now found the exception - if the menage is flooded the night before in a freek rain storm you get to go on a hack in you lesson :D
The weather was perfect, birght and sunny but not too hot. I was riding Irish (http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f192/raingodz/cowley/irish1.jpg) who is one of my three favorites :) and he was super safe and polite :)
The ride lasted about 50 minutes but the time did go by quickly (as it does fly when your having fun) and all the drivers we met were very polite too (there were 8 of us so we took a bit of overtaking), there are quite a few bridal ways near my RS which useful.
But it was a great ride :) I can see that when I get my own horse I'll be hacking out all the time :) (before any one gets too exited, it will have to be at least next year before get a horse, unless I find a share - not that I'm looking  ).

sounds fantastic. I remember my first ever hack.
Just a curious question: As there were 8 of you - how many escorts did you have?

Great news! At least you have good bridleways that end - there are next to none around my yard :(
So in a way we should pray for a stupid amount of rain the night before your lessons so you can hack :D ;)
Glad you had a good time though :) xxx

There was one RI, but it is an adult intermediate group, and I have a feeling I might be the youngest (which is kind of nice at 33 :))

ahh right. Just interesting to see how different yards hack out. We would always have 2 escorts for 6 people or over normally. Less so when the adults were hacking.

At my RS every one is graded (grade 1 to 7) and I am currently grade 2 (I think - I still have not seen the list of what is in each grade, it is quite an infromal system and is used mainly to get people of similar levels in lessons together).
Normaly you are only allowed to hack out from grade 4 onwards. I guess that since I have ridden on the roads a child, I drive and I was on a very safe horse I was not too much of a risk for them.

It's interesting seeing how different places do things. When I went up to my first RS when I was starting out, asking about lessons, rather than getting me straight in the menage, I went out on two hacks with them so they could assess me. They clearly deemed me not a complete liability as we cantered on both of them... God knows what my riding was like though, I dread to think!

the same thing happened to me also. but it wasnt the rain that caused it! i was suppose to ride with the owner of the stables and she had to cancel and she didnt have my number. so when i got up there one of the girls told me to get penelope and get her ready because we were going on a trail ride!! i loved it!! cantering through the forest and stopping on a dime!! it was great jumping over logs and the such!! glad you had fun!

I am so glad you hacked out, and that you enjoyed it too.
If I had stayed at my first RS, I'd have been stuck in the school for years till I reached the right grade.
So I am glad you escaped. And if the school where you have your lessons wont let you ride out again, I suggest you fit in some hacks from another yard. it is a fine way of learning.

Irish is gorgeous, I think I may have just decided where I'm going to take up riding in Sheffield-where is it you are?

Thanks everyone. I will have too look around and see which riding schools round Sheffield will let you turn up and take a horse out, since the sumer is on it's way and the evenings are getting longer. I think someone said Barnes Green Riding School did, does any one know if that is true?
It is raining again today :( I have a lesson booked tonight, but I suspect it will be in the indoor school.

Hacking is the best especially in good weather. Where I am - everyone from beginner upwards hacks out every 4th lesson so that they learn to ride independently. Of course the little kiddies are hacked in hand but once they are able to walk and trot on their own etc - they'll have a ridden escort

This made me smile as I am one of several owld bats on these boards who remembers having to go out on hacks on and then off the lead rein for months until we had mastered the basics and were considered competant enough on horse back to qualify for formal manege-based riding lessons

teapot, That method sounds brilliant.
Are you willing to say where you are taught this way? Or in a PM?
I would like to use it as an example when discussing ways of teaching retired people to ride.
