Feeling very pleased with myself and dying to share this news as I know alot of you have the same problems...
Last time I had a zip replaced on my MH boots it cost £25 which I thought was expensive so yesterday went into town to the cobblers who wanted to charge me £40. Righto. So today I set about repairing them myself.
I have 2 zips that are broken:
Pair ones teeth had bent halfway up and the puller had come right off one side. Pair twos teeth had splayed and the puller wouldnt go past that part.
So undid the bottom of the zip of pair 2 (where it joines the heel of the boot) so that the two sides of the zip were seperate, rethreaded the puller onto the zip and put a blob of superglue at the bottom so that it was now 'resealed'. Got needle and thread out and restitched the part where the teeth were splayed and hey presto!
Pair two I just had to stitch the splayed area again and they are now like new.
So how to prevent it happening again?
Well it seems that on the zip there is a row of stitching that goes over the teeth (not the stictching that attaches it to the boot). This seems to wear and fray. Once its started the teeth in that area have nothing to keep them uniformly together so they spread. Once they spread the puller has room to come off.
Have a look at your boots and if there are any areas where the thread has worn off or is starting to just put a row of 2 or 3 stitches where it should be and it should stop it happening - or at least delay it!
