View Full Version : Mane & tail spray

I've recently swapped from ready-made sprays to using baby oil on my mare's mane and tail as it gives a really glossy finish and is much cheaper.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what I could dilute it down with in order to be able to put it in an old spray dispenser? It separates when mixed with water and I can't think of what else to try.

Put it with the water and give it a good shake before each spray, don't spray in one spot move your hand as you spray else you end up with a greasy spot.

Thank you - maybe I just wasn't shaking it enough.

That's what I use too. It works great. You can also mix a small amount of vinegar in there to help repel flies.

Not furniture polish, it's for furniture not horses!
There was a discussion about this some time back. It's not something that I would recommend putting on a horse  You can actually make the tail worse in the long run.
My friend is a trichologist and they were seeing problems with silicone based products being used on hair. They were seeing 'silicone' burns on the hair when it was exposed to heat (either natural or from straightners etc) and though it made the hair look nice temporarily, it ruined it in the long term. As most furniture polish has silicone in it I would steer well clear.

Yesterday I did crazystevie and smaggi's mix of 1/3 Sainsbury's Baby Oil (£1.59 a bottle), 1/3 Sainsbury's Basics Conditioner (30p a bottle) and 1/3 water (totally free from the yard tap!) :D Put it in an old spray bottle I already had, gave it a GOOD shake and tried it out on Merrick. I can confirm this mix really works! There was a greasy effect for about 20 secs, then this vanished and left his mane and tail soft and shiny. They combed out really easily too - no knots to fight with and tonight they were still tangle free! His mane and tail are quite long and untrimmed so this is more of an achievement than it sounds.
It cost 85p to make this 500ml mix (got oil and conditioner left over for another batch) compared to many £££s in the shops so I was very impressed.
Tomorrow I'm going to try my top secret fly spray :D A strange mix of different recipes from the net! I'll report back if it works.

Yep - I've made this mixture up and can vouch for it too! :D Been using it for a couple of weeks a love watching the rain just run off.....
The only bottle I had to put it in was a Febreze one so I gaffer-taped over the label as I was worried people would think that I am so horse-proud that I was actually spraying Cherry with Febreze :p

My bottle used to be one of those daily shower cleaners. I ran it through the dishwasher and carefully cleaned the sprayer. If people look at me weird I'll just tell them I use one spritz a day to keep Cisco soap scum and mildew free. :D
Cisco gets big welts from fly bites and is allergic to fly sprays with Pyrethrins or Permethrin. They make is hair fall out and his skin gets very red and itchy. Yesterday I tried a new fly spray recipe. It is 6 capfuls of Avon's Skin-So-Soft bath oil with 20 ounces of water. It works great and he did not seem to be allergic to it. I'm going to check him tonight after I get home from work to see if his skin is irritated. Plus he smells like a new born baby. :D

Just to say, (I know I'm wweird but) I made some of it, and put it on my hair, I doesn't really work on humans . It makes it look greasy. Just incase, any of you are as strange as me, I thought I'd save you from having to wash it out 3 times, to stop your hair looking greasy.

It's one third baby oil!!! Not a good combination with human hair!
But thank you for the consumer test.... we now all know to definitely not try it! :D

Well my Canter Mane and Tail Spray ran out yesterday so I made up crazy Stevie's magic cheapy mixture with some left over alberto balsalm cheap conditioner, tesco baby oil and Thames water.
The boy's mane is gleaming!
I found it not quite as good at detangling compared to the shop bought stuff - but then again OH hadn't brushed his tail all week and it has been very muddy.
When I went back to see him this evening it was so easy to brush through.
Very important to shake it regularly before spraying.
Thanks for the tips guys.:D

Did anyone read the tip in a magazine - think it was Horse & Rider - about using mayonnaise in manes?! Don't think I will be trying that one, and Goldie's Girl I wouldn't recommend you use it on yourself either!
Anyone actually ever tried mayonnaise?

yuk! can't think of anything worse to put in your hair:eek:
I've now got to make up some to take to my friend, before much longer the whole yard will be addicted to it:D
the good thing with it is you only need a small amount to start with and his tail is so soft still the next day!
I did however put some in his mane and had a lesson last night, I was doing no reins work and had to grab the mane!!!! you guessed it it was too slippery haha:p

Boy am I glad I was nosing around tonight. We have just bought my 10 yo daughter her first pony and as you can imagine it is all money. I have just spent another 100 quid online this evening getting in some of the basics and was going for a wee jaunt to my local saddlery tomorrow to get some cosmetic stuff - think I will be trying this one.
Anybody else got some cheap ideas?

Erm, I posted a while ago that I was trying a home made fly spray so maybe it's me you're thinking of?
I never got round to using it! I bought all the ingredients (rather a lot of ingredients actually - got a bit carried away!), mixed them up, got even more carried away thinking of things that might repel the flying beasties, and added a good slug of Bacardi   :D :D
Realised straight away what a stoopid thing that was to do, but couldn't be bothered re-making it without the Bacardi.
The mix is still sitting in my hallway in the plant sprayer looking gloopy and weird. It'll stay there until I tidy again, which could be a few years - might find it's grown a new strain of penicillin or something by then... :D
Now I use the Avon Skin-So-Soft & Fresh Dry Oil Body Spray (phew) which really works and doesn't cost a fortune either.

Lol!! So glad I'm not the only one this happens to!! Still, we're not quite bad enough for a visit by Kim and Aggie - that programme makes me feel so much better about my house!!!
I've used the Robinsons M&T stuff in the past but always thought it smelt like the stuff they use to clean public transport!!! :D

Fluke's mane's been looking very dry so I mixed some of crazystevie's formula up and gave him a conditioning treatment. I used Sainsbury's Tea Tree and Mint conditioner -- thought it might help repel flies too! Must say it smells really nice. I worked it through the mane with my fingers, left it for a bit, then brushed it through. The hair was lovely and smooth and soft -- but I'm not used to seeing it that neat and soft, and I'm sorry to say I couldn't help but think he looked a bit of a dweeb!

"Strawberry, she's made me look like a dweeb, hasn't she?"
"Never mind Fluke. I still think you're cool."

Let's see how it wears! :o I'm hoping it will help strengthen the hair, as it's quite frizzy and fragile at the moment.
