View Full Version : trips at canter?

several times now, my horse has tripped at the canter and fallen on his nose. He's not lame that I can tell, and has good feet, and footing in the arena. He doesn't like to stay on the rail so we have a big fight about this, then he goes in little circles.
We went on a trail ride and cantered on the grass in a straight part, he went off from the standstill (in the arena I use the crop and he trots into it) with just the leg, and cantered perfectly, no tripping, slow, collected, great.

In the arena, could he just be tripping over his own feet? Is there any way to get him to stay on the rail? He's fine at walk and trot, I use leg aids and the rein at the canter. His head can be pulled to the side, but he won't listen.

I'm absolutely no expert but here goes. Is he cantering on the wrong lead? You say he's going in smaller circles - maybe that needs sorting out first since he should be going where you ask him to go rather than where he wants to go. I hope this gives some insight. If not, I'm sure a more experienced person on the board will offer some help.

the fact he's worrying about the fence is going to make him not concentrate and so maybe trip over his own feet, he is more likely to do this the smaller the circle so this could be possible. you need to practise some other leg aids (travers turns on forehand etc) get him thinking about what he's doing rather than having a fight.
do you lunge him whats he like then?? he may not move properly or not pick up his feet, is he ok in his back??? :)
also is he balanced enough to be doing canter in a manege?? i hardly ever canter in the manege unless it's a fair size one or if the horse is particularly fit!!!! it's hard work!!
he could be lazy but this sounds unlikely from what you are saying.
teaching him to lunge and getting someone to help you get him over along the fence would help you, don't try to force him over there just do lots of circles and different things and slowly creep out to the fence, maybe put a jump along side, he may not think about the fence if he is focuesed on the jump!!
