appaloosa is a breed, created by the Nez Perce of Idaho, USA.

The spotting patterns are considered colors of the breed, like leopard print, snowflake, blanket, etc.

Actually, no it's not just a colour in the UK. The UK has it's own appaloosa breed registry. All are basically "branches" of the Appaloosa Horse Club (USA) with strict breeding regimes to improve the appaloosa breed.
You can get people breeding their appaloosas to other breeds like the new forest that cannot (I think) be registered with your country's breed registry. Therefore that horse that is unregisterable is just a colour.

Have a look here ^^^^^
And just a general note, appaloosas actually originate from Europe and Asia, as depicted in art. The Spanish Conquistadors brought spotted horses over to the Americas, some escaped and the Nez Perce tribe developed a refined breeding programme of these horses. There is a further history of the appaloosa after this... ;)
