I have been working with extending and collecting the trot and canter. We do great collecting but when we extend he rushes. What I do is play with the bit in his mouth and then I use my leg to send him forward but I close my rein (still playing with it giving gentle tugs) and tell him to not go faster. To collect I use a little more hand and a lot less leg, just enough to tell him to keep pace.
