Color Help: Bay? Gray?

My mare had a foal this morning and I was wondering.. What color is he? He's bayish now, but will he stay bay or go gray? She's gray, the stallion was bay. We called her previous owners and they said she's had one gray colt with them and one bay colt that went gray later on.

His legs are light (I heard that's a bay foal thing?) But his tail has white hairs in it.

He has A LOT more white on the other side, but I didn't get a picture. Or is that normal in bay colts?

Bay foals that will go grey do usually have dark legs, and sometimes have grey spectacles too. That's not always the case though; some foals actually don't show any signs of greying until they shed the foal coat, so you do have a bit of a wait before you'll know for sure!

The white in his tail is typical of bay foals though - this picture shows my bay filly Teleri, and you can see how light her tail is. That grows out black over the first couple of years. In fact it's his tail that makes me wonder more than anything if he might go grey - it's actually quite dark for a bay. As you can see from Teleri's, there's usually quite a bit of pale hair in there. Teleri has no grey parents and is not going grey. She's stayed bright bay.

Thanks, he's my first foal. An accident, but I love him anyway. His name's Midnight Escapade (Midnight).

In a few weeks shave off a piece of hair near the rump and see what color it grows back. Just kidding.

hi its difficult to say as my foal was that colour when he was born and now he is a very dark bay also his sister was that colour and is also dark bay and her mother was gray
