I'm trying to get my head around colour genetics. Chev - I have read your stickys and found them very illuminating :) But I still can't attempt an answer to this question. A friend is putting her grey mare to a chestnut stallion. What is she likely to produce?

Please share knowledge :)

depends what colour the mare was before she went grey, and whether she is homozygous for grey or not. petal's parents are that combination, and they had between them 5 greys and 5 bays. the greys all started out bay, that is what mum was before she went grey and her parents were also grey and bay.

50% chance of grey, regardless, unless mare is homozygous in which case they'll all be grey.

they'll all get a chestnut gene from dad as that is all he has to pass on.

if mum had a chestnut parent then there is a chance of chestnut babies.

Mehitabel's pretty much answered it. :)

Any idea what colour the mare was before she went grey? Better still, any idea of her parents' colour?

For example, if the mare has two black alleles and two bay, she will only ever throw bay based foals, regardless of the colour of the stallion. And then there's either a 50% chance of grey, or 100% depending on how many grey alleles she has. If she is chestnut under teh grey, then any baby will be chestnut from that pairing; again, same chances of greying apply.

The stallion could also havae a bay allele hidden away there; so that's another factor.

Basically, without knowing more, there's a chance of black, bay or chestnut foal from that pairing.

Then there's either 50/50 or 100% chance that the baby will end up grey. :)

My friend bought the mare aged 9. She is believed to be by a well known grey stallion (no papers, she is to be DNA tested), no knowledge of the dam. She is flea bitten and the bits have a pink/red look to them!

could be any of the above then, if you don't know what colour the dam was. the colour of fleabites don't correspond - petal's are blindingly ginger and she was born a very dark muddy bay. her mum's started off ginger and went black as she got older, i am hoping petal's will do the same.

at least a 50% chance of grey is all you can predict.

Who has she picked in the end?
