Grr, I can't seem to find accomadating long boots for us with chunkier calves 17" mine are. I only want to do a bit of local showing/jumping so they don't have to (and would prefer) a cheaper option.

Any ideas ladies?

I'd go for gaiters and short boots - are they allowed ?

I'd think so.

I didn't think they'd fit me?

I've seen some gaiters with wide leg fittings - I've been looking lately and have unusually wide calves for my feet size. Can't remember which site but am sure if you go searching you'll find some, rideaway have a sale on at the mo !!

Have you tried the Mountain Horse range? My OH has the same problem and she has found MH long boots to be a really good fit. Just a note to say that although she is normally a size 6 - she bought size 5 on the recommendation of the lady in the saddlery (even though they really felt too tight to her and were difficult to get on). After wearing them in they are a perfect fit and she is absolutely delighted with them. Says she'll never consider another make now, after many trials and tribulations of trying to find some long boots to fit her fat little calves :D.
Oh they also have a full length zip - also important if you have "fat little calves" :D :D

Edited to say - just re read your post and you are after a cheaper option - which MH are definately not. But OH thinks they are worth every penny.......................................

Thanks for the reply.

Harvey99 - I was looking at MH (If I can earn some money soon) and was worried that they might look to 'chunky' for showing. Other then that i'd love some of them!

Some of the MH ones are "chunky". In fact OH has a "chunky" looking pair - think they are the High Rider II ones. Anyway, she has worn them for prelim dressage and SJ. Given a high sheen and polish (my job  ), they looked pretty good.
However, I know for more "serious" competition she would consider different MH boots. There are a couple of pairs that look really smart and not at all chunky. I'll see if I can find the ones she's been looking at.

Try Reagent. They come up big - "narrow" must be at least 14.5" at the calf when I'm sure the size guide said it was 13.5

Keep an eye out on ebay and remember that you can always get them stretched or an insert put in by a cobbler. :)

Chickflick, I think these are what she would like to get for more serious competition:

I also came across these, if you like that sort of thing (OH doesn't  )

Cheers again Harvey99, they are both nice!

The MH ones would be so much better for competing if they didn't have those massive logos on the side. The chunky foot you can get away with, it's just those logos that put me off a set.

Mints,

My calves are about the same size as yours and unfortunately the MH long boots don't go that big.

I have ordered a pair of Tuffa Norfolk Long boots:

from here (http://www.tackanory.co.uk/product.php?xProd=311&xSec=57) (Suzanne the shop owner is luvverly) - I rang Tuffa and they said the wide size goes up to an 18" calf.

Just waiting for them to arrive, so will give you the verdict when they do!!

The saddle craft gaiters come up very wide - I usually have a probelm with my calfs but mine are too big they suggest you buy a smaller size and I think you should (I didnt as I thought they would be too small!!)

I think Robsinsons have copied the Mountain horse sportive rider

These are still expensive but cheaper than the MH ones.
