One of the genes in the sabino complex has been identified :)
Scientific bit here (http://www.rbi.it/restricted/pages/04/4f.htm) for those interested.
What's been found so far is the gene responsible for the sabino1 pattern (alleles noted as SB1 and sb1), one of the patterns within the sabino complex.
Sabino1 is caused by a variant of the KIT gene and one copy of the SB1 allele results in the sabino1 pattern; two copies of the allele results in a white or near white horse.
This is not the only genotype that results in sabino patterning though. Several horses that do show sabino pattern have tested negative for sabino1 - SB1 has not been detected in purebred Clydesdale, Arabian or TB stock although there is definitely a form of sabino patterning present in all of those breeds.
SB1 is believed to result in more roaning, jagged socks, and splashes than other sabino genotypes.
