Well from my post 'i rode my horse today' you will read that i had a brilliant time riding my horse yesterday. Was gonna ride her again today for the second time, but guess what? She's lost her shoe...again. Only got it put on last week, and the week before, and the week before that. Now she has to stay in until next tuesday (when the farrier comes) as she is so footsore she can hardly put weight on her foot. Last week my farrier shoed her fully and said not to turn her out until the ground dried out. Ground dried out, she went out, it stayed on for a good few days, then it started raining today, and off it came! How was i to know it was suddenly gonna start raining whilst she was out?!

Has really p*ssed me off. Luckily my Farrier's formula and hoof ointment came today so i'll see how she goes on them. I just hate the fact she has to be in when the ground is wet, and she's footsore. My farrier said when he shod her that, because she ripped some of her horn off (because it is so thin) you can see the nail at the side, so if the mud gets in, the shoe would come straight off. Exactly that happened today. Am so annoyed :( As soon as the shoe is back on ill still have to keep her in until the ground dries! Always the same front foot as well! How long will the supplement take effect? Will it take effect? Please help!

Salsa had this problem last Autumn. The same shoe kept coming off week after week. In the end, I bought Keratex hoof hardening ointment and used it every day for the first week, then started cutting down the frequency. The effects took about a week to be seen, but he's only lost a shoe once since, and that was when we were "between farriers" so he had to go an extra three weeks in the same shoes (and lost one the day before the new farrier came out!). Now I use the Keratex once every couple of weeks.

I'm not sure how long feed suppliments take to work, but it takes a year for the hoof wall to grow out completely, so it may be that she's still casting shoes for a while before the new wall starts to grow through.
