At my old yard i had a big tack box for all my tack but i couldn't take it to my next yard, i've been looking around on websites for cabinets and they cost around 100.00/150.00 and mum said she wouldn't by anything which wasn't under 50.00ish:( . So does any have a tack box that they bought cheaply or know websites were the sell them. I've looked on ebay but there still really dear, i was thinking of maybe making one but not sure if it would still cost lots with all the equipment. Any info much appreicated! :)

GO to Homebase and have a look at their outdoor cupboards thingys. I was there this avo and was just thinking what a good tack box (for saddle and everything) one would make. They come in different sizes and different prices.

B&Q have them as well. Do mind where you put them though as they are quite lightweight and a horse can easily knock one over which usually demolishes it! OK in the tack room though and of course, none of us would ever dream of putting our tack boxes or other dangers in our stable with our horse.....would we?

I am using a small chest freezer. I got it for free because it doesn't work. It's well insulated and rodent proof.

I have one of those B&Q boxes. Fab, just be careful - overbend the lid and they break:rolleyes:

*Hands up* I have one too! I have one too!

Personally I wouldn't recommend them for saddles and bridles as although you can lock them they are pretty flimsy to break into. Mine stores all the other stuff that I couldn't bear to not have at the yard and of course I hardly ever use any of it, just root through it daily looking for that one elusive thing which has always worked it's way to the bottom! :D

Cherry thinks it's just one big horse-treat box as that's where all her goodies mysteriously appear from.... she knows exactly how to open the lid to snuffle around looking for anything with a promising aroma and if I lock it to prevent her nosing, she just knocks the whole damned thing down the aisle in protest!!!

I bought an old metal office cupboard from a second hand office equipment store , cost £25 and they delivered it for a fiver. Its about 6' tall and big enough for saddles and lots of my junk. OH also made me a big wooden trunk to keep my clean rugs in- and was slightly put out when I made him paint it bright pink !

echo karin with the chest freezer...i used to have one and they're really useful. Easy to fit a lock on and defnately rodent proof so you can even keep your feed in there.

I have a metal cupboard thing...not quite sure what it is really but it locks. It was there when I arrived at the yard and has little hooks for my bridle and room for my saddle too :)

I'd advise checking your insurance policy if you're planning on leaving tack in any kind of tack box on the yard. I know my insurance policy stipulates on the type of lock/security of where my tack has to be kept for it to be covered. Best to check.

For things like bandages, boots etc the garden box/chest things they do in B&Q are great.

I always look at the chests when im in B&Q or homebase (usually when the parenst drag me there looking for opaint or resealer or something) and think what fab storage chests they'd be!

I saw a really nice tack safe in the derby house catatlogue that came free with horse&rider but it was 200 quid so I thought maybe not!
