Is there anyone else who is actually NOT looking forward to stopping feeding their horse this Spring - I seem to be the only one on my yard.

I got my young mare last Autumn and people said it was an awful time to get a horse with the winter coming on. However I have found it to be the most perfect time mainly because feeding is just so bonding. There can be few greater pleasures in life than standing in a muddy field under the stars after a day in the city feeding my girl; or more lately listening to the birds while she eats. Feeding, to me, is no effort whatsoever.

I've been cutting down her feed as the grass is coming in and I don't want her carrying any surplus weight on her young joints, but I'm dreading stopping altogether.

I know it sounds really really silly, but to me it feels almost like it must do when you give up breastfeeding. Please don't laugh :o

I think you have to consider whether you are feeding her because she needs it or for your own comfort, and if the latter then maybe think again.

My ponies, being Natives, don't get dinner at any time of year or they would explode, though obviously we feed hay.

As to the bf analogy, yes I know what you mean! However remember that partners manage to bond with babies even when they can't feed them so there are other ways. How about doing some in hand training where she can earn treats? That creates a great bond.

You're right of course Gill. I just love her to need me - wrong though it is.
