Where can I buy products that eliminate lice? Also any information on lice would be greatly appreciated. My pony has lice, I never thought MY pony would  ! Ive put louse powder on her but there everywhere and the powder was flying around in the wind....the instructions on the tub had rubbed off too, it was the gold label stuff.

We tried various powders etc from the saddlery with no success. The only stuff that worked was Deosect (cypermethrin) bought OTC from the vets; you dilute it and sponge it down their back (with gloves etc!). It kept flies off for a month too.
Don't feel guilty about your pony getting lice - it's v. common at the end of the winter / early spring!

Hi,I'm new on here but do recognise your problem!
My horse has had lice all winter and it has been a nightmare! The first thing to do is clip the horse out and shampoo with a louse shampoo (I have one at the yard but can't remember its name - I'll check tomorrow) Also get all rugs, coolers and stable rugs cleaned, strip out the stable and disinfect thoroughly. It's very hard work and takes a lot of doing, but believe me it is the only thing that worked for us. My mare is only just growing back her coat and still looks like she's motheaten, but I think we have turned the corner now.
Lice are peculiar to the winter but do 'jump on' at the end of the summer so my plan is to clip her out again about Sept/Oct, and do the lice shampoo a couple of times before the winter sets in.
As an after thought - the louse powder did work for a while but it really dries out the skin so that it looks very dry and wrinkly.
I am bathing my mare tomorrow with a Tea Tree shampoo to see if that will put some oils back into the skin or at least sooth it a tad.
Good luck.

My neighbour's shetland had lice and looks very motheaten. The vet said that you arent allowed to use louse powder any more due to the laws against using anything that could be harmful for consumption and that thye now sell a 'spot on' type thing like you get for cats and dogs - sounds much easier adn better for their skin - IKWYM re. the drying effect. You just put a dab on their kneck and tail I think. You also get shampoo for when it gets warm enough (it was nice today - might have to try Oscar's tail tomorrow!).

Hi Cosmic Angel 12,
I have checked the shampoo and it is called Dermoline and is specifically for Lice infestation. I also used the Tea tree shampoo yesterday and it seems to have made the coat less dry. I can recommend the Dermoline but also you can apparently use something either called or similar to Topline that is used in cats and dogs. You just put it on the mane I think.
Good luck

My mum's horses have had lice this year. Her vet has said that there are lots of lice around this year, much more than usual. He also said that, as some one said a previous answer, they removed louse powder from the market and the stuff they sell now isn't so good. Deosect, as someone else said is good as it comes from the vet and kills most things.
