View Full Version : 4 point harnesses and buns

I was thinking earlier, my show hat has a 4 point harness with the string at the back, and there's a gap above the string. Currently the harness kind of bunches up when my hair is in a bun, so I was wondering whether putting the bun through that gap would look better? So the harness is behind the bun.

I think I'd have to do my hair and then get someone to tie the harness together when the hat is put on, I can't put the hat on then do my hair.

not sure it'd be safe if you came off and landed on it - it might whack your head sharply forward, if you have anything but the smallest bun.

That is why I only have a long plait, I can wear a bun with my bowler, but it is only a walking bowler.

I don't think it would make any difference? The bun doesn't move position, the hat is only marginally less sticky out than the bun and the bun is a donut ring anyway so it's squishy. The differnce would be that instead of bunching above the bun the harness lies flat around it.

I could have a plait, but it would look extremely messy. My hair doesn't do neat plaits, and I do prefer buns with riding hats anyway.

If the hat is a problem what about rolling the ends of your hair round a pad of some sort - a pair of folded tights works well or I have a bun do-nut which unfastens so you can use it straight - and gathering it into a large hairnet, snood style (think Joan Crawford in all those black & white wartime movies) then fasten an elastic in a matching colour or a scrunchy if you absolutely must round the whole shooting match in the nape of your neck? With practice It makes quite a neat low-slung bun. Unless you have loads of hair or tight curls the padding is a must if the hair isn't going to collapse and look like a dog's dinner.

Or you can get a gadget that does more or less the above. I've seen them in John Lewis if you are near one. I wasn't very lucky with this because my hair is poker straight and slippery and I found the padding method worked better

I already use a doughnut ring for my bun, it's more the way the harness sits around it that I'd like to alter. Just think it would look neater.

I think I know what you mean. I just do the bun as low down as possible so it doesnt get in the way of the harness.

Sorry, wasn't very clear. The technique I was trying to explain makes a chignon which sits below the harness sort of on the neck above shoulder level.

Actually I think that sounds even weirder than the original explnation

It's already as low as it can go without resting on my collar and tipping my head forwards, and if I tried to drop it any lower I wouldn't have enough hair to cover the donut ring. It's not growing

I'll try my theory next time I show ;)
