View Full Version : What Made Me Do It????

Well, had a c**p lesson on Saturday as couldn't get canter right. RI says I'm beating myself up over nothing as everything else is going so well. To redeem myself I decided to take Misty up the road and back. As she was behaving so well, we decided to carry on down the scary, windy lane. We made it to the bottom so I must have had some sort of brainstorm and decided to take her right round the block (45 min. hack at least). We encountered petrol tankers, buses, motorbikes, dogs, kids, and we have to ride down a main road to get back to the yard. I've done this on a Sunday when its quiet but as I turned into said road I remembered it was Saturday morning and decided that I'd probably made the wrong decision. It was like Liverpool City Centre on Xmas Eve, people and traffic everywhere. Anyway, to cut a long story short, we made it home in one piece after a bit of dancing about and napping in certain places. All in all, a very successful first 45 min. solo hack!!

Good for you - you brave gal! Not like me, I had the hack from hell last night, had to get off:( there was a colt screaming at us - Storm was going bananas - I felt safer walking her. Confidence now zero. But, I'm glad to hear you did so well - maybe I will be as confident as you one day.:)

wow sounds manic-well done annh
trewsers there is no shame in getting off, if your horse needs help getting past something (like a screaming colt  )
i get off all the time with my spooky tb, and if anyone dares to tell me i shouldn't, for whatever reason (and believe me i've heard some b*llsh*t spouted about why you should never get off your horse), then they will be firmly ignored.
you dealt with the situation, no one got hurt- good result.

Well done you. However, it was very wrong of the school to let you take a pony on busy roads like that. They would have been liable for any accident caused I would have thoiught. However you did really well.

on our hacks to get to the fields and hills we have to go up the main road for 5 mins each way and it has nothing to do with my YO or RI (as long as we stick to the bridles of course and are polite etc) or am i missing the point here (sorry) :) x

I dont know whether this was a school pony or the person's own pony. If he/she is the person's pony then no, it sure dont matter but if it's the school's pony, then yes it does matter.

Here! Here! (or is it Hear! Hear! ... can never remember :) ).

There's nothing wrong with getting off if it's appropriate and safe. Stuff them at your yard, they're not worth worrying about.

Well done Ann, second everyone's comments.:D

Also don't worry about the canter and don't let it beat you up too much, that happend to me and I got so worked up over it, canter just didn't happen and I turned into a heap, just got really tense because I was sooo obssessed with getting the canter right that nothing happend!!! Now took the focus off and worked on other areas such as sitting trot and without stirrups that now the canter is begining to come together again!

Trewsers, there is no shame in getting off and leading if ncessary. Safety first all the time, both yours, your horse and other road users! Stuff those who say anything different. I'll bet they also said you should have given your horse a good wallop with the crop as well!

i wont smack drummer (even though all horses are different, rupert certainly was a diff story) but with drummer its different, he is not naughty, if he stops on a hack it is because he is apprehensive or a bit nervous and a smack hinders that (tried a tap once) he works better if you give him a pat and let him have a look and then encourage him on and praise again, he is not stubourn either (unlike rupert) and he is just genuinely apprehensive. when he ran out on a sj i learnt to smack my boot lol the noise was enough for drummer

Trewsers - you should not have been made to feel small :o x hope the situation gets easier for you :) if not, b**gger them  ;) thats what i say, and swallow a whole load of 'i CAN do this positive attitude' :) i believe that there is no right and wrong re riding if something suits you and and your horse it is right and vice versa x

Yes Afellpony - this is my own horse. Seemed like a good idea at the time. She only started panicking about 3/4 of the way round and by that time it was too late to go back and avoid the main road. If she'd been a complete maniac I would have phoned for the cavalry back at our yard, but it never got to the stage where I thought I wouldn't be able to cope, and when she was messing about in the traffic I took her up on the pavement or down a side road.

Well done!

I'm sure it helped because you did it on the spur of the moment and didn't have time to think about it and panic!

So? Will you be doing it again? Got a taste for it??? :D

Fantastic Ann!

What a great horse and what a brave woman:D It is great to have so many role models on this site to aspire to:)

Trewsers - read Kelly Marks' books - she advocates getting off your horse in hairy, spooky moments so well done.
