Found a tick on Bims chest today, not really known them getting them before but the dog has picked up quite a few in that field. I plucked it out still wriggling :o but is there anything i can do to stop her gettng anymore? We give the dog flea and tick stuff and it seems to do the trick but is there something you can get for horses?

my horse joe sometimes gets ticks from the kangaroos and the way to get them out without leaving in the head is to sufficate it as they breathe through there bottoms so just get some insect killer or metholated spirits or somthing and dabb it on the tick with some cotton wool or somthing and wait a while and the tick should just back out, and then because it backed out its self the head comes out aswell, because if you pull it out it is very easy to leave the head in and its not good to leave the head in as it can make the horse sick. Another way to get the tick to back out is to get a needle and a match or a lighter and hold the needle under the flame and wait untill the needle gets hot, then touch the tick with the hot end of the needle and the tick will back out straight away as you will be burning it, then kill the tick once it has backed out its self. sorry but i dont know if there is anything to keep them away mabey you could ask your vet? there might be be somthing similuar to what you use for your dog made for horses?

I put vaseline on them and that suffocates them. Vaseline is also harmless to the horse.
Don't pull them out and leave the head in as it could get infected.
