I had my shetland pony colt gelded last friday and i am interested to hear from people who have had their horses done. What was the recovery time for them, mine is a 3 year old so i expect it will take longer. What was the swelling like and how long did it take to go down? My vet said to spray the area with a saline solution, did anyone do this or just leave it. I know it ranges from horse to horse but i was just wanting a rough idea of what i should be looking out for. :)

With my old stalion I had to clear the wound daily and let it heal inside out, but he was a 14 year old stallion.
We had one done 2 weeks ago, he's wild so not easy to catch to wash daily. He has healed with no swelling visible or feelable within 2 weeks, he has just started his work today and was fine.

I would definitely follow the vet's advice on this - he knows the horse and the circumstances. It's a very long time since I had Rohan done as a yearling - I don't remember it being a problem for long, though.

mine were gelded early spring in a field saved for the purpose so no mud, dirt and no flies. that meant that i never had to wash any of them and all were fine, the swelling took about 1-2 weeks to go down.
if the vet had suggested rinsing with saline solution i would have if the horse was not too distressed by it, i think saline solution is good for wounds.:)

Deffinately clean it - my boss's had his 12 y/o Stallion Gelded and he got an infection which caused a lot of stress for the poor horse and a big vets bill so keep it as clean as possible.
Hope he recovers soon :D

I had 4 yearlings done last spring, 2 of them had no swelling and healed within 2 weeks the other 2 had slight swelling and fluid dripping they took a week longer, but they were all turned out on good clean grazing and we just kept an eye on them and they all healed well, we didn't wash any of them, as long as the wound looks cleans, is not hot and hard, doesn't smell and he's kept somewhere clean it should be fine. Mind you they did walk like John Wayne for a few days!!:D

Much older stallions need a bit more TLC and wound care. Younger guys tend to heal quicker with fewer complications.

I have a miniature horse that we gelded about a year ago when we bought him. The vet told us to leave it alone and let it heal on its own but then he got an infection. i think the best thing for you to do is clean it out and prevent infection.
