View Full Version : Dom's First "Hack"..... (& a couple of pics!)

Ok I use the term "hack" loosely... it was second field tour and Dom's turn. I walked alongside for some of it just in case Madam decided to play up but whether she can sense that he is stronger or a beginner... she really took care of him! Grr! Scarcely a jog or a trot or a feather out of place! She still got sweated up (as did most of them) so she was clearly excited to be out "en masse" again! It was a big group tonight, about 15 horses/ponies and there was a lot of excitement and stupidity generally... but we survived!

Anyway, this is her just in from the field after a quick brush off....

Then looking round for "dad"....

Tacked up....

.... and ready to go!!!

We normally take the Kimblewick off when Dom rides and use the Dutch gag with the reins on the bit rings as it's milder.... but I felt safer with him riding her in the K and martingale!

He had a breeze and did admit upon dismount that his shoulders were a bit achey from holding her back ..... :D

Now we can BOTH ride in the fields.... :D

She's ever so pretty Jane. I can see why she is the *Cherry of your eye* ;)

I didn't realise she had so much feather - I won't allow you to chop it off:rolleyes:

She scrubs up well, and is looking in FAB condition. You should be proud :D

Well done you three - how fantastic is Dom - he is so brave!

Cherry is gleaming - was she clipped or has she lost a lot of her winter coat.

Well done:D :D

Thanks guys! *head swells with pride*
Chickflick I didn't realise she had so much feather - I won't allow you to chop it offShe had them clipped last Spring - when they did the ultrasound on her back leg for her tendon rather than having one odd leg, they clipped them all... so they're still growing back really. I luv 'em but they have been hard work through the winter!!

Whatanejit Cherry is gleaming - was she clipped or has she lost a lot of her winter coat.
No, Dee, she wasn't clipped at all last winter. I swear to God she started losing her coat the day after the winter solstice - 22nd December! Lots of grooming with a shedding blade and in particular the wonderful "Grooming block/stone" - tadaaaa...it's nearly all gone now - phew! She isn't rugged either any more and is out all day... she either rolls on grass when I'm not looking or isn't wasting valuable "Spring-grass-eating Time" by flailing about on the ground :D I know my luck will change soon though :p I will say that by removing her L/W rug she is MUCH less scurfy and dusty.

NoviceNic Look how beautiful she stands in the picture with Dom on her
She does hold herself really nicely in the Kimblewick (although she is reined for a pose in in the pic as she was desperate to join the gang who were forming across the yard). I tried her yesterday in her Dutch gag for a change as she used to lean really heavily, just to see if it was my imagination and she was just the same in that as she had always been - head down, heaving away as if she was pulling a cart!

Edited -

Sooty - yup, that's the H/W

Pink's Lady - those chaps were MINE... I have such huge calves!!! Have to get some new ones now!!! (goody - shopping!)

How big is she again?? She has a very similar look to our Fagan. We thought he was a cob. He can be v forward going when he wants to be and his coat is more similar to TB. His Mum always joked he had TB in him. Then she found out he is Shire x TB.

She is 15hh (or thereabouts as I have never officially measured her :o )

I've always assumed she is an irish cob as that's what I was told and if I see others I can see similarities but she could be a Heinz really. I'll always love her, regardless of what mix she was created from.

She is VERY forward going.... although I would definitely describe her as "bombproof" - I would never use the term "ploddy" :D :D :D

Fagan has a huge amount of tail and loads of feathers. He is about 15 2hh.

I will try and get a picture of him and pm it to you.

Cherry is just gorgeous! And I dont say that to everyone. Shes a really really nice type. Will you do some showing with her? Dom looks like he's getting into it too...

Duchess looks horrible at the moment with her clip growing out. Cant wait for her summer coat to come through, with her lovely bay dapples..

Ok, ok, Stooooooop: you have a cob and she's forward going and has white feathers... hmmmmph : mine is at a permanent standstill and has yellow-tinged feathers which are a bug**r to keep clean - whhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyy    What's your secret? At least everybody comments on her gleaming summer coat (until they look down at her feet  )

Seriously, your OH looks cool and collected atop doesn't he? Quite the gentleman rider

Look again Imp - the bottom of her feathers are muddy! I knew that part of the field tour includes going through water filled ditches so they would get worse (and they did!) She had yellow ones when she was in a lot if it makes you feel better. And I'm sure with your neck injury you feel far safer on the gorgeous Megan than the "wants-to-gallop-as-soon-as-her-feet-hit-soft-ground Cherry"????

Incidentally, went round the fields tonight for our first "Yeeee-haaaar" - it was FAB - loads of galloping and blowing away of cobwebs.... much better on our own with no TBs to try and catch up with! (bet I will ache again tomorrow  )

I'm telling you.... she's too busy eating to roll.....

OK - If this makes you ALL feel better.... she is a real horse - honest....

Remember I turned her out for two hours rug-less on a sunny winter's day???

Remember the result.....
