View Full Version : Will it make her sick?

My garden is full of grass. Not too long and not too short. Stumpy's field has nothing really! Just a bit of earth and shoots. Would it be dangerous for me to put Stumps in the garden for a munch?
Of course I don't want to make her sick by the sudden change but it would only be for 10-15mins grazing...what do you think?
And yes, I have seeked permission from the parents. Stumps will just be in the garden so my mum can see her! Plus, I wanted to treat her with the grass.

horses cant be sick they get colic instead or so i was told.. i dont think it would be bad for her but watch her because the lush grass might upset her stomach and bring on colic so be carefull how much she has

Oh lol, I didn't mean 'literally' sick. I just meant sick as in poorly or ill.

I put mine in my garden for 10-15 minutes before their paddock was ready but then they expected it and would try to take themselves to the garden when I lead them to their stables
I'm sure our neighbours think I'm mad :p

They were fine though, no illness or side effect. Our garden is a 7min walk away from the yard so I'm just gonna lead her in-hand for a munch :)

Lush green grass can cause a horse to scour, but to bring on colic I think it would take more than 10-15 minutes. Before our horses go out on spell we gradually bring them onto grass... usually starting with 15 minutes and then increasing the time to a couple of hours over the weeks. No ill effects, perhaps a bit of scouring if the grass is lush... so I wouldn't be too worried :)

We've often used our garden for short "top-ups" of grazing for our two ponies. Their fields are pretty bare from years of over-grazing before us.
We "electric fence" off certain areas or let them graze in hand for 10-15 minutes (add folding chair here!), as some areas are a no-no, eg certain plants. They've never been ill but...as Supercali says, they expect it thereafter! Scene; very strong cob dragging OH off the yard and towards lush lawn... All adds to the fun.

I don't think she'll come to much harm in a short time - your garden. on the other hand, could suffer considerable damage! On the occasions I put Rohan in the garden for a few minutes, he always went straight for all the flowers first :)

No dodgy plants nestling amongst the grass which may upset her either???

Nope, just pure grass. Maybe just 10 mins I think. I don't wanna kill her!

If it becomes a regular thing, don't let them in when the ground is v. wet - ours scampered about after rain and churned it up, hoof holes everywhere! Swore I'd never let them in again.
