How can I get dust out of coat and make a dark horse shiny

Can anyone help. I am taking a dark brown horse to a show soon and would like her to be really clean and shiny, but feel it's too cold for a full bath.

Is there anything I can do to get the endless dust out of her coat, and what do people use to make their dark horses shiny.

You could try hot towelling her. Get a bucket of hot water and a towel wet the towel and wring out as much as possible then towel the horse all over as you would if you were grooming. It lifts some of the dust off them without soaking them through. :)

This is a bit more long term- but rugging horses and adding oil to their feeds, with frequent grooming, usually helps horses get shiny and healthy looking coats.

Even if you can't give a full bath, you can groom thoroughly then wipe with a damp cloth. If chilly enough, you can use a warm damp cloth :) That gets off a lot more dust than one might think.

You can keep the damp cloth on hand while at the competition, and wipe off just before going into the ring.

There are also products you can use to clean a horse without rinsing; I think Cowboy Magic does one.

to be honest, if you use warm water you will be fine to wash. stan got his first bath of the season on saturday and will be getting anouther one this sunday. he had no problem just make sure you have rugs to hand.

I will try and remember the warm damp cloth idea. As for frequent grooming and changing feed, I'd love to but not my horse, I see her once a week twice at most. Obviously I groom her each time I see her, but I guess by frequent you mean more than once a week.

You could do a mane and tail and dry them off well with towels.

There's not an awful lot you can do at this tme of year if they are shedding too.

When it's cold I always get a stiff brush and a bucket of water, and brush out all the water, then if you start puting Vegitable oil into her supplements everyday, that will bring out a really nice shine to her coat. Thats my trick.

I read on another thread here about wet wipes and tried this today... works really well! :D

amazing how much dust came off on the wipes. :cool:
