View Full Version : Another Height / Weight Question

I'm currently horse shopping.......

(Thought it would be fun but feeling a little disheartened right now :( )

Anyhow, my RI has contacted me regarding a 14.2" pony (described as "chunky").

The thing is, I weigh 13.5 stone (so + tack would be 14 stone?), I'm 5 foot 6.

I know that the pony could technically carry me, or my RI wouldn't have suggested it.

I'm concerned about predjudice against me whilst out hacking. (big cruel lady riding poor little pony  etc).

Is there anyone on here that actually owns and regularly rides a pony that is around my weight/height? Do you get any rude comments when out hacking?

Thanks
Sarah

i'd have thought you'd have been fine if he's a cobby type. go try him out and see :)

I ride a 14.1 dales. Am much shorter than you but weigh similar so I would look much heavier if that makes sense (my bmi would be higher). I have never come across any negative comments. Old age and deafness could of course be playing a part here lol.

My OH rides my 13.2hh NF pony. He's about 12 1/2 stone at the moment (he's on a diet;) as he will need to be a bit lighter when I finally get a saddle for her as we want to ride for 3 hrs + in the summer). She has no problems carrying him bareback and he looks fine on her. In theory, she can carry 13 stone. Saddles weigh quite a lot, but a 14.2hh stocky pony should easily carry 14 stone - my TBx can carry that much, and she's anything but stocky!! Some natives were bred to carry a lot.

Nope, 15st or so - most saddles weight at least a stone and you're clothes will weight near that.

If the pony is truely 'chunky' (dales, highland type), then yes, no probs. If it's some peoples idea of 'chunky' (think warmblood type  ), then probably not.

How about this one??

Don't know much about weight carrying properties, but wouldn't mind a smaller horse/pony that my daughter could maybe ride too

Well - I didn't tell her my weight - because I thought she might say I was OK wanting a sale....

She said 13 stone tops - I said I weighted 13.5 and then there's tack.... She said she weighs 13.5 and she's ridden him. She also has a skewbald gelding 15hh and they are not too far away. I need to call in at the Supermarket before it closes and then I will prob make an appointment to visit either this evening or tomorrow. At least she has decent facilities to have a little ride.

If you see any more please let me know.

God yes! He's georgous! :D And if you don't like him, send him upto me! Only think is you might feel a little tall if you're used to riding bigger horses.

You could have great fun with that little chap - make a lovely show cob if that's what you wanted to do, would be great fun out hacking and most cobs like that thoroughly enjoy jumping.

B****cks ;) Unless he has problems with his back, he'll carry you no prob - he's built like a tank!

Only reason she might be saying that is that type of horse often attracts very heavy riders, and if he was mine, I won't want 15-16st in him either. BUt the woman riding in the picture him must be over 13st as it is.

P.S - saddle doens't look like fits him - looks like it's tilting towards the back - it's making the rider ride in an 'armchair' position. Probably too narrow.

I think the saddle is too small for the person thats on him;)
