Do you have to use special plaiting thread to do your horse's mane? Or does ordinary thread work just as well?

Use plaiting thread because it's thicker. Normal thread couldn't stand up to the use, although button hole twist is effectively the same as plaiting thread and is what I use for mending rugs. ;)

Could you use thick embroidery-type thread instead? I have a show this weekend and don't think I can get to a tack shop in time :( but I'll definitely get some for future shows.

You could try but I don't think it would be the right sort of thing. Have a little practise tonight ;)
