I'm trying to convince my friend to enter his veteran 17hh in a local equitation show, I've done my enquiries and they have said that although there are no rules against synthetic saddles it maybe frowned upon, my theory is even it is frowned upon then sack it and use the first few shows to see if you enjoy showing, if you do then invest in a new leather saddle.

But they have said he'll need to do trot and canter in the group and then an individual show of our choice or one of the judges choice - what type of things could these possibly involve??

This is a quote from Daffy on a different thread

This is what I do, or would do if we could manage it all. If you can't do an extended trot/reinback don't do it, (even if the judge asks) and just don't mention anything about it.

Walk away from judge for 5-10 strides
Trot around short side and extend down the diagonal
Into canter around the next short side and change the rein through trot across the diagonal (they usually extend a bit here due to the impulsion from canter anyway)
Into canter at the next corner, go on the short side in canter
Once you get round the next corner onto the straight ease into a gallop
Pull up just before the next corner into a canter for 3/4 strides
Back to trot down the short side and turn down the center line into walk.

Try and halt at the end where the judge can see the whole of you and your horse. Obviously if they ask for two figures of 8 you'll have to show it, but a bit of practise and they get them no problem. If you struggle with canter leads, remember to bend your horse to the inside and use a lot of inside leg and seat before asking with your outside leg

Hope that helps
