I have just purchased a 3 year old Exmoor X Pony, I noticed a scab on the lower jaw about 3 inches back from the lip. It was a healing scab, although broken away with thick yellow/green sticky puss coming from it. On closer inspection, it appeared to be a round hole - any ideas? it does not cause him any discomfort when I touch, although unable to leave headcollar on him as it irritates him.

Given his age it's possible that it's an abscess related to teething. I'd get the vet out to check it, but in the meantime keep picking the scab away from it and make sure that the pus can drain out. try washing it with mild antiseptic too (just saltwater will do). The vet can check there's nothing amiss and can give you some antibiotics to help clear it up.

Obviously cannot compete with Ponyvet's knowledge, but, your post rang bells with me. Many years ago my horse (who I had sold and just bought back), had a similar 'hole' under his jaw, pus filled etc.

Immediately called my vet who diagnosed strangles. I really don't wish to worry you unnecessarily but I would agree that a vet's visit is a must, as early diagnosis is much better whatever the problem.

Hope all goes well.

Strangles would be a possibility and i would slap myself for not mentioning it, however you'd expect it to be further back, and also the horse would usually be sickly as well. Either way i's worth getting the vet to have a look.

Had a pony last spring with a similar problem. he was on loan and arrived with scab as described, but on inspection it turned out to be a rather large, deep abscess. Picked off scab and cleared it out daily and it soon healed.

This pony had a horrid habit of rubbing his face and lips (inside out at times) on fencing. We came to the conclusion he had got a splinter in his face due to this which had become infected.

It cleared with only standard treatment for an abscess and he's now fitter than the average fiddle, and at the age of 28 too!
