Hi,
When I ride, I do fine at the walk, but when I trot, canter, or lope, I cannot help but hold on with my legs to keep from falling off! My horse has a rough, short stride that is hard to balance over. It is not her fault, though, because she is built with short legs and a thick neck and throatlatch.

 Any helpful suggestions?

What do you mean cling on with your legs?? With your knees? A BIG no no! Or if it's your lower leg... your lower leg should be on the horse at all times anyways...
Can you please tell me whatcha mean!?
Cheers!

Well, I cling with my thighs more than my knees, as if bracing myself. I also hold on with my lower legs. Thanks bunches for your reply!

ok try this. When your riding try opening your leg from the hip joint... this should bring your lower leg in contact with the horse... your knees don't neccessarily be on the horse... Some horses I have ridden my knees are WAY off the horse because she was too small...
Hope this helps! Seems there's no other replies so ya gonna have to make do with my replies! :)
