What are their use? What colour is best? And what classes are they used in?
Cheers :)

I *think* they are really just for show. Although they can be used for a slight tap if your horse is playing up.
Brown is probably better but it really depends of the colour of your tack. They can be used in-hand and ridden but they are sopmetimes asked not to be used in certain classes eg. family pony ridden or novice ridden.
hope this helps

brown only in the show ring, no matter what else you or your horse wear.
They are mainly to complete the picture, and very rarely are they ever used. The only time ive ever smacked a horse with one was when stan got dangerous in a class, i gave him a smack to stop him lashing out at anouther pony.

I've rather fancied using mine for smacking spoilt brats before now, but I've always managed to refrain.
You can get crops which are basically plaited leather with a brass/leather button at the top and the flapper at the bottom. If you think you'll need to use it I'd invest in something like this rather than a cane. Canes can break quite easily, not that I've broken one myself.
For inhand I have a crop like I described above but it has a plaited leather lash on the end so I can flick him with it. I think that's more important in classes where you really need the horse to move out though, most people just use a normal cane. Some sneak a schooling whip in, but these are normally too long to fit the show rules.
