hi, i have a 15.2hh appaloosa x who loves jumping and seems to be really good at it. we've jumped up to a metre so far but i recently had a lesson with a show jumping instructor and she said the only way we will improve alot will be if i get her using her back end more and stop her being so forward weighted. please could someone give me some exercises i could try. im doing alot of lungeing and she has improved a bit.

I would think that she means your horse is running onto his forehand and not getting his hocks underneath him which means that he will jump flat and not bascule over the fences. The only thing that can help here is flatwork and more of it to get him working on the bit more.

Flatwork is definitely what is needed- loads and loads of transitions- walk to canter and back especially, and then shortening and extending in trot and canter, loads of trotting poles and adjusting the gap for different stride lengths- a really good exercise is having the poles around a semicircle or around a corner and you keep dead straight to the middle and keep the impulsion- building up to jumping with a really small x-pole at the end of the line- do this on a stright line first though- should help especially if you keep your position up and ride 'uphill'! Good luck :)
