in Bims field there are lots of buttercups coming up, i have just been researching them and im now wondering if the sore broken skin on the pink bit of her muzzle could have been caused by them?? If so what do i do about them? there are lots coming up all over the field and i dont have another field i can put her in!!

Also there is another plant in there that i dont know what it is. I thought it looked a bit like forget me not, lots of tiny bluey purpley flowers blanketing the ground. Someone suggested speedwell but i googled it and that doesnt look right. Any ideas??

ETA it is slender speedwell, is it bad??

butter cups are poisonous although they don't usually eat them' some horses are sensitive to them and get blisters on their noses' my youngster got a really bad nose last year and it was a battle to get stuff on it but it cleared up and she has no reaction yet this year so hopefully she wont'' maybe it is just when they are first exposed to buttercups that they get a reaction' sorry no answer really to how to cope with it' maybe put a barrier cream on the horses nose'

hi i have buttercups too coming up too but only in half the paddock so im going to electric fence that half and spray them off and leave em out of it for 14 days, they are a nuisance ive heard too they are poisonous but only if they eat a large amount but im not going to take any risks .

slender speedwell, no mention of that in my Allen Photographic Guide to poisonous plants for equines.

Buttercups can cause sensitivies like you described. If you have lots of buttercups, probably best to do as JBaker is; fence off half, spray with suitable weedkiller, then rest it for 2 weeks before return (the dead plants can be more palatable). Then do other side.
