If it's a local show you can get away with wearing your usual show gear.Short boots if you're a junior.

can you run in your long boots? trousers are very easy to come across.

You'll get marked down for riding gear in a senior handler class as turnout is taken into account. Just steal some beige trousers or something. ;)
For senior handler especially make sure you have gloves, a hat (of some description but not a baseball cap) and also that you carry a cane.

Depending what level the show is you may not get marked down for riding gear at all. I've seen people show in riding gear plenty of times and not be marked down, and a handler class is about the handlers ability mainly, or should be.As long as you are clean smart and presentable you'll be fine, though at higher level shows trousers would be correct.

And turnout is also taken into account. Every show I've been to, Adults have been told that trousers are better. They're also easier to run in than jods and long boots, which is important. It's not hard to find a pair of beige/black/navy trousers and stick a pair of discreet trainers on!

even at local level ive seen people marked down in the handler classes for a lack of gloves or long boots. If you have to wear riding gear short boots is ok but long boots are very difficult to run in

Are hats an absolute must have? Have seen lots of pics of handlers in the ring hatless in my welsh journal? (Apart from the chaps in their flat caps and I aint wearing one of them!!!!;) )Would a velvet riding hat be ok? Would feel a bit odd in anything else:p

velevt riding hat is fine. Welsh handlers in welsh classes dont tend to wear them, but in senior handler classes you should wear one as if you dont you could be marked down

I always use a beagler for showing my welshie inhand, just looks smarter to me (and better/cheaper than my harnessed hat) and as I do local level with lots of kids I don't look out of place at all. Most people don't when showing welshies though, something to do with having to run so fast hats don't stay on :p
In senior handler any type of hat is fine, then if you want to take it off for the M&M classes feel free. :)

So for mountain and moorland in hand, would a hat be the done thing? It's not in the kid's section of the schedule....Cheers.

It's up to you really. At local level I'm not sure how many judges are aware that welshy handlers don't wear hats, I just think it looks neater with a hat and bun than a pony tail and no hat, and sets a good example for the children.
This is what I wear for showing inhand, although I have an inhand whip for this season. Ignore the two step :D

At this show I had four other competitors, and they were all juniors so they all had harnessed hats on. I was the only person in trousers though. At another show I did, out of I think 6/7 competitors, there were only two of us wearing hats, and I'm fairly sure there were no children in the class. I think a beagler or trilby/aussie style hat would look better than a harnessed hat for inhand though. You can get beaglers from www.dressageonabudget.co.uk for about £30.

Parise - In the spirit of this board I wish you all the luck in the world with your inhand class and apologise if asking a question on your own personal thread upset you at all, it was very rude of me and I do so apologise - next time I'll start my own - but more importantly to Daffy and Kanuma thanks as always for your help - we came third in our class and qualified for some UKshowing thing or other (won't be going, nerves wouldn't stand it!!!!)

If you've qualified then you're good enough, so go! Lets face it, if I can do it, anyone can. I get just as nervous as the next person ;)

No point in creating another thread, advice can be given to more than one person, I'm always hi-jacking threads:p
I've found this one useful, Bry is off ridden work but I'm going to take her to a show to do an in hand part bred MM class. Wasn't sure about the trousers of hat. So ta!!
