Can anyone recommend a brand/rug for my new horse who is practically related to a camel?
He has a Rhinegold medium turnout, (not sure what model) that fits him pretty well. I just got him Weathabetta rain sheet but its a bit tight when he puts his neck down.
Any ideas? Do any of the manufacturers make anything specifically high withered or deep? I didn't get much when i googled it.
I'm looking for a half neck winter turnout, no more than 300g of fill.
:)
Thanks.

no ideas sorry - i'm actually looking myself!
rhinegold, eh? *scribbles down*
i have three weatherbeeta turnouts and i find they all do put quite a bit of pressure on the withers as well, though i find the ones with necks (or half necks) don't slip back as badly as the no-necked ones.
if i locate any i'll get back to you..

Ahhhh if you are looking for rugging those wonderful thoroughbred shark fin withers I can recomend Masta and Shires. :D

Fal make some of their rugs in two neck sizes, giving you an extra 3 inches around the neck.

My kingshead winter turn out on is a high neck. It's done him a while and is now away to get washed and reproofed for next winter. My boy has high withers too

Thanks for the info - i think i'll try the Fal extra neck for him.
I have ordered a Fal snug (ordinary size) neck for my other horse so i'll try it on my shark finned fella and see how tight it comes up.
i'll let you know when i get it.
Fal don't make any snug necks in the extra neck sizes which is a shame, he isn't clipped so the snug would be a nice change from the classic style (his mane is terrible where they sit) and not too hot for him. Sigh.
So many of us have this problem (alot of horses needing rugs have TB in them?!) i'm surprised the rug companies don't even mention it.

Sometimes wonder if these rug manufacturers ever go near a horse ! Do they realise that horses spend most of their time with their necks stretching down to eat grass ?
Thank goodness they don't make bras - one size fits all !!

I have the rambo and weatherbeeta half/hi necks, I find them great, I got a rhino one but the half neck curls under itself and rubs my horse? may be a one off as I dont have any more of this make to compare, I do find that the weatherbeeta fit better on broad chested horses, Pickle is quite narrow and they seem to pull tight across his shoulders.

Having gone through hell and high water to try and get my incredibly high withered and big shouldered TB a LW turnout, I know how you feel!
We've tried Saxon, Weatherbeeta, H-ZONE, Fal Pro (the bigger neck), shires, all didnt fit him. So at the end of my our tether, we took the plunge and bought him a Rambo rug. Fits him like it was custom made! :D Very expensive, but worth every single penny!

Hi Nutty Mare,
thanks for the advise, my horse is a pretty extreme case... interesting that the Fal-Pro extra neck was no good either. The Rambos are expensive but so are the fal-pros! it would be nice not to have a bald horse by the spring!
Do you mind me asking which model Rambo you got and whether you have tried the snug neck version?
I think i'm just going to have to get the credit card out and try a couple and send back the ones i don't like. I was hoping to have 2 winter turnouts but he might have to have a cheapy one as a spare/dry one. Thanks! :)

We have the Rambo Supreme Lightweight turnout, with the detachable neck cover. If classic necks dont fit him, then I advise trying high necks, as they are cut higher and so less chance of rubbing! :p
