I need to know this too. Just bought my first mare.

Do they only come into season during the summer months?

Seems to depend on the weather. Last winter my mare came into season at the end of November when we had a week of lovely weather. First time in ten years.

A mare cycle is 21 days. So from the first day of her being in season to the first day of her next season is 21 days. My mare is usually in season for a week out of every 3.

Most mares are only in season duringthe summer, but my girl never misses a month, very regular, every 3 weeks, throughout the year. But then my mare is a bit excessive with it, theres other mares on the yard that you dont even notice they are in.

My mares a 'flirt' to put it nicely! ;)

Not to mention the high pitched squealing that echoes round the field every time a gelding comes within 10 yards:D and me hollering "shut up you tart"

For 3 yrs we hardly noticed our Bon in season. We know have a little Mini Shetland colt who loves all the girlies and is doing pretty dances up and down the fence. Bon has become the hormonal bi**h from hell. And squirt. I have never seen such a mess. All the reamins are left in her tail and down the back of her legs. :( Sorry for being graphic just absolutely shocked by how this lovely gal can be such a tart.

Phew! Its not just me that yells that then. Much to the amusment of the others on the yard  Im the only one with a mare y'see.

Curly has seasons all through the year (oh joy), well she had one about january/febuary time and was VERY moody but she was in season last weekend and wasnt too bad, tail up, squealing, peeing everywhere etc (cant help that she's stabled opposite a stallion...). apparently its more regular in summer. One week outta the month in general i think. I mark them off on a calender so i know when to cancel my shows.
Me and my moody mare. We're a right pair.
