A lady at my yard rescued her pony from it's loan home a while ago, she'd said she wanted to put her on loan as she couldn't afford both this pony and her daughter's pony. I haven't been able to ride Ziz for quite a while now, with problems with arthritis, injuries in the field and now her saddle. I am not currently the most confident hacker and had heard that this pony was a safe hacker, I had a chat with her owner and asked if she was going to put her out on loan could I try her. Owner was pleased as obviously she would be at the same yard and owner could still see her and could cover for me if I was away etc.
Rode her last night, she's 14.2, bay, aged 8, don't know what breed !!. She's very unfit so we just went for a walking hack with owner on foot and owner's daughter on her pony. Hack went really well despite me not fitting in the saddle (Wintec treeless) and pony being a bit footsore. She's been barefoot for 3 years and previous to the loan home was fine but was neglected there, farrier had come the night before and trimmed her.
Hack didn't start too well and for a nervous nellie I'm amazed I didn't get off :) , the daughter's pony and the pony I was on were standing nose to nose when daughter's pony bit mine on the muzzle, cue screaming and leaping about, I calmed her down and we moved away. It was a country lane ride for probably about 40 mins, we had cars come past us both from behind and in front, met a moped and at the farm we turned round in saw a marquee being put up - not a problem at all for my pony. She was far more interested in trying to eat the verge.
Had a chat with the mother afterwards, she's now more interested in a half loan, where we split the costs equally and both me and the daughter ride the pony. I was pleased with this last night as it means I'm not paying or having to look after 2, and so OH is more happy - we moved to Somerset partially so we could have better lives, more money, less commuting etc and he wasn't too chuffed when I told him about my plans. After sleeping on it am now wondering if this is a good way to go ? I'm going to see the daughter school her and hopefully pop on myself and then also go out on a hack by myself with her.
As I was about to get on one of the other youngsters on the yard came up to me and whilst talking told me that this pony had broken her fingers a year or so ago when she used to ride her, bucking in the school. Despite hearing this I got on quite calmly  . She's quite green as she hasn't really done anything, apparently hated schooling although now she's come back to the yard the daughter's been schooling her with no problems.
Another woman at the yard rode this pony last week, out by herself, in all paces. I'm going to have a chat with her but have heard that this pony has brakes, didn't tank off in canter and was a nice ride.
I'm hoping that if this goes ahead she'll help with my hacking confidence, meaning I can feel good about riding Ziz, who isn't a problem out hacking at all but I've lost my confidence so have a big mental obstacle with her. 14'2 was such a nice height to ride, I felt like me riding again.:D
