My farrier recommended using something like biotin as Charlie's hooves grow really slowly. Is biotin the best thing?

Theres lots of new and different supplements for hooves lately.
I use biotin for my boy during winter. He doesn't recieve a feed during the summer and keeps good condition. Biotin helps with skin, coat and in particular hoof problems - but it has been confirmed and been successful for over a decade, unlike some new products.
Hes only been on biotin since last september and my farrier was last out a week ago and comment on how brilliant his hoof growth was and general condition. I remember back to when i had him on loan and the owner gave no supplements. The farrier then used to complain his hooves were bad.

formula4feet :) sod the cost of it coz it really does work. its the only hoof/general vitamin and mineral supplement my pony gets and she looks superb on it. her feet are unrecognisable from what they were 2 years ago before we started her on it.

echo about formula 4 feet. Best hoof supplement there it. Hooves need more things than just biotin and formula 4 feet has just about everything in. I used to feed an average biotin supplement and can see a difference since switching to formula 4 feet.

Biotin is basically the main ingredient in most hoof suplements, I personally love Farrier Formula, I would swear by it, but it is expensive  I think the compound supplements work best because they have lots of other vitamins and minerals in which helps in the uptake of the biotin.
When I had Bo on Farriers Formula (I put him on it at 2 as he has 4 white feet and they were good and I just wanted to keep them that way) I worked on the theory that I could spend £15-£20 a month on vitamin supplements and then another £15 on a biotin supplement or get Farriers Formula for about £37-£40 (which was also good as it is pelleted so I could give it without any extra feed in summer) and get fab all round results for about the same money.
A friend has recently brought a youngster and the farrier commented on how her feet weren't so great, a couple of months on FF and already the new growth is looking great.

i've been told that biotin works best when it's an ingredient with some others.
we had ben on farrier's formula for a month or two which didn't help a great deal but our farrier told us that there is better (and cheaper!) stuff on the market now.
we got Gold Label's Biotin Plus which after a few weeks made a heck of a difference! imo it's fairly cheap (£10.50 at Chandlers, lasts 30 days), but people have said you can get even better. personally i know it works and am happy with it so i have him on it anyway.
it's just a matter of getting opinions and trying stuff for yourself in the end :)

Ah but the real trick is sticking with it, with any fed hoof supplement you won't see the changes until you get new growth, so at about 1cm a month you need to allow a good 3 months before you can see what is growing and at least 6-8 months for it to 'hit the floor' and have a significant improvement.
