While browsing in Ikea yesterday, came across a wooden kitchen type step stool which I thought would make a great mounting block. Pretty reasonably priced at 7.99 and seemed pretty sturdy. I paid about £12 for my plastic one so this seems good value.

Hope this helps someone!

I paid two quid for our mounting blocks (at that price we have two!) in a local 'discount' store... sturdy plastic steps, just the job. So good in fact that I bought a couple of extra ones to sell on e-bay;)

I've got one of those wooden Ikea step stools as a mounting block! It's great.

I can vouch for its sturdiness -- on Saturday I led Fluke up to it, in front of my instructor and his owner who had turned out to see our progress. The Comedy Pony decides to heave his front half up onto the block and balance there, circus style! Cue much amusement in the audience.

The shame of it! But if you're after a nice sturdy block, I can certainly recommend it.

Hi Neen, yeah it is sturdy isn't it, my friend and I both tested it in the store, as if we were mounting a horse, got some funny looks lol:)

(Sigh) YO has spent absolute squillions on making the yard wonderful - showers for the horses, solarium for the horses, horse walker, state-of-the-art stabling, indoor schools, wonderful grazing, cafe for the punters, centrally-heated classrooms, hot water on tap, secure tack rooms - but can we get him to build a proper mounting block? Can we hell!

ive always used milk crates, or 44 gallon drums cut in half
it all depends on the size of the horse you have to get on!

Milk crates as mounting blocks are very dangerous. I know of an accident where the horse got his foot stuck in it & was seriously hurt.

is it safe to mount on rocks or stumps? i always do this, is it safe? also, i know it hurts their backs when you get up without a mounting block, but what about someone giving you a leg up??

I don't see any reason why mounting from a rock or stump would be unsafe,my mounting block is the side of a trailer, its the perfect height and works well, this is a pic so you know what I'm talking about,

And getting a leg up would'nt hurt their back as much getting on from the ground, just as long as you don't pull down on the saddle to much.

I found 4 plastic milk crates and lashed them together with baling twine

It works very well and cost nought..

All the other people on the yard use it.

Before l found the crates l bought a plastic 2 tier stool from poundland (yes £1) and that is fine too but not as sturdy, although its useful for pulling manes etc.
