View Full Version : Joint supplements (I have question!)

I asked this on the tail end of another thread, but thought I'd post separately to see if I get more response.
Sugar is 16 and lately I've been thinking that maybe I should start giving her a joint compound since she's getting older. I asked my vet and he said she moved fine and didn't need it...but I thought that supplements were often to help prevent joint problems as well as treat them?
So...would it be worth it to try Sugar on a joint supplement? What is the best one that can be purchased in the USA?

I use cortaflex which is from America I think. I noticed a big diffrence when I put our aged pony on it and a definite worsening when the initial tub ran out, bought some more and have kept him on it ever since. It costs me about £15 a month and I think prevention is a good idea myself if you feel you can afford it.

I would recommend Corta-Flx as well. I started my horse on it about 2 months ago and it does seem to be making a difference to his way of going.

I'm surprised your vet didn't plug any of the supplements they sell! Our Joe is 15 and in peak condition (so I'm told!) and recently we discussed with the vet supplements, he's currently on superflex - even tho he doesn't need it yet - vet said it wouldn't do any harm, preventative measures etc. Vet sells one that I'm going to try (which is cheaper). I'm sure somebody from your neck of the woods will recommend one.

If theres nothing wrong with his joints and movement i wouldnt put him on a specific joint supllement. My girls on Cod Liver Oil, shes five and its just a preventative i guess. It helps with joints (people take it in capsules) but is natural and not a real supplement that she could learn to rely on.

Hi, I just got a supplement here but it is one you can buy in the USA, http://www.horseselectsales.com/equilite.htm
Its the Nutri-bites, you just feed 1 treat per 400lb each day, they are not the highest in Glucosimine at 600mg per treat but that gives a reasonable maintainence dose. I chose these esp for the summer months as my boy is quite fat and doesn't need to be having extra feed to give the supplement in. They have a full range and my guys seem to like them. I am just using them for maintainence as Bo damaged the cartlidge in his stifle.
I thought they were quite good value too, $20 for 90 treats, thats easily a months worth :)
I would agree with cortaflex for a higher dose, you can get that really cheap from Valley Vet :D

Well, I visited the local tack shop and they didn't have the greatest selection in the world. :( But I did find a supplement I thought looked good. It's called Joint Combo Hoof and Coat. I got it because not only does it have glucosamine and chondroitin, but it also has biotin for hooves--and since Sugar is barefoot I figured why not give her a little something extra for her hooves? It's about $45 a tub, which isn't bad, and comes in these little pellets which Sugar doesn't even notice when mixed in her grain.
Let me know what you thing of the ingredients (the measurements are per each 2 oz of pellets):
Glucosamine HCI 1800mg
Chondroitin Sulfate 600mg
Ascorbic Acid (Vit C) 104mg
Manganese 16mg
MSM 750mg
Biotin 16mg
Zinc 100mg
Vitamin B6 20mg
Does that sound all right?
