This is somewhat of a gross/awkward subject... but... For those who have geldings, you'll know what I'm talking about...

I've read the articles/posts on here about sheath cleaning, the bean, and what not. However, I have a question about the outside part. Even though the vet cleaned Otto's sheath in Feb/March it's already flaking away with loose bits of dead skin coming off. I bought Excalibur sheath cleaner, but now I'm wondering if I should just leave it. I heard that you shouldn't clean it too often but I didn't know if it applied to the tinkly park, but his special area is looking somewhat gross. I don't want to overwash it just for my benefit...

Also... the skin is flaking and I couldn't help the urge to peel a teeny bit of it off. It peeled off relatively easily in a way that kind of reminded me of peeling off a chestnut. Should I get a bad mom award for that? Do you think it was ouchy? He didn't seem to mind, but he's good about somethings and won't complain.

Are you sure it's dead skin? I know it's horrid and I hate to say it but could it be dried on Smegma (urrgh)? I've seen some horses/ponies where their tinkly bit looks awful all covered in black bits and I've always assumed it was as I suggest and not dead skin. I have heard that spraying the offending article with baby oil when it's dropped down helps to clean it itself with you not having to touch it. I haven't tried it myself but it sounds like a good idea.

This will sound disgusting, but what colour is your horse and the said peeling stuff.
Greys have a orangy/black colour smegma.
Other colours have black.
It is probably just as Maclynky said.
