Ive seen lots of threads on cleaning geldings parts but cant find any on mares equivalents areas.
I've never cleaned Curlys but do you think it should be done? If so can anyone give me idiot-proof instructions  or is it just a case of pointing the hose and thats it?
Sorry if this sounds stupid but its mainly lads down my yard (horses and people)

I'd explore gently with a warm hand, gloved if you prefer (how would you react to a hose on your equivalent bits  )
Some horse's hate having their udders touched, ours is just a tart and goes goey . Try and have a look - they can get covered in a waxy black gunge (it's slightly sticky, but does wash off your hands with a good scrub) that's quite stiff and can attract flies. If so then they really could do with a good clean. I usually use cotton wool balls in a bit of dilute hibiscrub. Some bits can be well attached and come off easier with a good soaking.
Good luck :)

I clean my ponys parts, bottom and teats. On her bottom i used fragrance-free baby wipes and fragrance-free baby oil. And i just use a wet sponge inbetween her teats because lots of dirt gets trapped there. Hope that helps x

We used to clean the cleft in the middle when bits accumulated. We had to use a lot of fly get on her teats - being thin skin, the flies gobbled her up down there.

I guess id better grit my teeth and have a look, especially since she lives out, methinks she'll get even dirtier that way.
Not looking forwards to this.

Honestly, it's really easy with mares!
Ria loved having her teats cleaned and would pull embarassingly ecstatic faces all through the process :p
Just get a pack of baby wipes (you know the really plain ones, no perfume etc).
Take one, stand at her hindquarters so she can't swipe you if she objects. Start it on her belly so it's not a surprise, run it down firmly to her teats and firmly rub and wipe over and round them.
You'll get black gunk coming off so just grab a new wipe every so often until they come away fairly clean.
Ten to one she'll love it and get fewer flies round there too!
Now geldings, that's a different matter!

Stumpy gets her cleaned once a week, because they bleed with flybites and get gunky quite quickly. Like Tangle, I use diluted hibiscrub with a normal cloth and get 'right in there' Also, she secretes droplets of milk (??) sometimes and that dries so needs to be cleaned.

Coquette and Sadie get their "bits" (dock, udders and unmentionables;) ) cleaned every so often with a clean dry cloth, maybe a bit damp if they're especially dirty. A quick wipe is all it takes. Sadie loves have her udders done. Coquette can't stand it. She crosses her legs and tries to sit down. Drama queen.

Yep we definitely have a BIG tart - Hairy Mary spreads her legs to make it easier :o Not so fond of her having under her dock done, though...
Rach - just take it easy the first time (for you and for her) and don't be in a rush. It's really not that bad - especially if you keep up with it. We had our mare for 9 months maybe before it even crossed my mind (first horse - felt very guilty for a long time :o) - she was so mankey it looked like she had 4 teats . THAT took a fair amount of time and was VERY grim. Now I make a point of doing it every couple of weeks and it just takes a few minutes :)

Chez is fine with all areas under her tail but if I go anywhere near her udders, I get flat back ears, a pokey nose and a shaken head at me - "How VERY dare you!".... - the only difference of opinion we have whilst grooming/washing. I can however, desensitise her by cleaning her tummy and then I am allowed a quick wipe round before she catches on!!!

It is so difficult with my mare as she does not like it at all, she never kicks usually but when your around her teats she sure will get you. I try and do it as often as i can but it just takes time and patience with her but it is annoying :)

My mare loves having her udders wiped. She shuts her eyes and her bottom lip goes all wobbley.

my mare has 2 hard lumps near her teats. She does not like them being touched either, one is scabby and the other one is hard. Do you no what they could be?

Do you know, I've had my mare two and a half years and I have never done this  I have 'eyeballed' the relevant areas and they looked okay, but reading this discussion, I think I should do more (bad mother ..!).

Honey is positively tarty about the whole thing, and will lift her leg up and out so I can reach better. To begin with I thought she was trying to kick me, but she sort of stretches her leg out and stands it on tippy toe to give more room round her udders. I just use my fingers and clean all the caked dry stuff off - every two weeks or so in the summer and not in the winter as she has such a long winter coat I forget they're there! (I was shocked to remember I had forgotten she had chestnuts last spring when her wimter coat moulted out - they were completely invisible!)

I've never done Storm's and they don't look manky or gunky - I've seen them when I've been brushing her belly. I shall look further tonight!

I am fairly sure Shannon's bits were never cleaned (or at least not cleaned for about 8 years) before I got stuck in :D When I described the process to her owner, she looked horrified and said I was brave... Actually, like the posts above, Shannon seems to positively enjoy it.
I only intervened because she was scratching her tail, and apart from worming (which was done), research suggested a manky udder might be a cause. There was a lot of black gunk in there alright - and now I do it about once a week, using unscented baby wipes.

Baby wipes, never would have thought to use those.
I started cleaning Magics udder after she foaled Ziggy. Before that i could not touch her because she would bite me. I clean Magic udders when ever she gets shampood, and i check 1-3 times a week for sores, and gook. She was weaned 5 months ago and still has milk so i check her every day for lumps and sensitivity.

Lol! No-one at our yard really oes it. Disco just looks at me stupid when I pick the manky waxy stuff off her udders. She's not overly impressed by it but there is no nastiness. She doesn't mind the sponge under the dock. I do it about every 1&1/2 months and more so in winter as he gets mud around her udders that itches.
Some ppl say not to remove the waxy stuff, but think that's just in the case of expectant mothers, that u should leave it on. Don't really know.... is not a subject I am very experienced in.....

Okay, prepare yourselves - I'm going to be specific in a clincal way. I now recognise what needs to be done with udders. There have been referrences made to 'under the dock' etc. My question is, is it appropriate and necassary to wipe out the vulva?

Ok...thanks for that, and the answer is...im not sure :o.
Hahaha :D:D

i dont think you are supposed to clean "in" side, like you would a gending/stallion because the mare would loose lubrication and would get iritated and its not like they can get stuff stuck up there like a gelding/stallion. I think you would just clean around it with a baby wipe or something soft. Im not an expert but that is what i would think. I always wipe under the dock and butt and gently swipe around the vulva, but never inside, i dont think my horse would like it if i did, nor would i :P.

I decided to be brave and clean my girls "sensitive regions" today, during my spring clean (last day of winter today! :D )
She's a very very snarky wee bub and hates most touchy feely things, apart from having her mane pulled, she loves that
Anyway, I was standing far back to avoid being clobbered if she didn't like it, armed with my unscented babywipes. She let me touch it, and then I moved back, giving her a pat...we proceeded in this fashion and she LOVED it! She kept nickering like crazy when I touched them, and had a big grin on her face. When I moved away she kept wickering, wanting me to go back for more! I was falling apart laughing :D I actually took a photo, because I need NR's opinion...her bits are sort of saggy, does this mean she's foaled before? Do they look like she's foaled before?
She didn't even react to the flash on the camera going off under her stomach!
I know nothing about her previous life!

I swear they aren't really that shiny :D it was the flash on the camera!
She's erm...stationbred, which pretty much means I have no idea  She's actually bay, but she was clipped and went silver then a sort of tawny colour in the clipped bits, and now has patches of summer coat

I would say they look relatively un, er.. looking for a word here :) . Unenlarged? They look very similar to my share mare's who we have been told has not had a foal (though we cannot be sure what she did or didn't do during her first 7 years of life).
Funny how they seem to like it... I suppose it must be nice or they'd never let a foal near them. Chuckling to myself here ;)

I dont think mares like being sucked on, atleast not when the foal start bitting. There were times when Magic would yelp and bite or kick Ziggy because he bit her, once he left an indentation on her.
