Well I just sent a sample to Gill (westgate Labs) as last friday whilst poo picking the field I found hundres of squirmy things under almost every poop in Bo's paddock, I was particually concerned as Bo missed the last worming, because he was on loads of drugs for his stifle I didn't want to add anymore chemicals to his daily doses.

Not sure what they are so I grabbed a worm count kit out of the car (only had 1 left) and buzzed it off to Gill for testing. Got an email today to say the Strongyle count is <50 no eggs seen, 'great' I think, but I am still concerned as to what the little nasties I found were, are they another type of worm I should be worried about?

They were at the bottom of each pile of poop, in small clusters (each cluster being about the size of a 50p coin). They are greyish colour and about 5-7mm long and about 1mm wide, they seem to have a pointed end and a flat end. They were very lively and as soon as I turned the poop into the barrow they were going mad trying to bury back down into darkness. Any ideas what they could be? are they just some kind of fly larve? would spraying the field with something kill them off.

I did get some pictures on my mobile but they are not very clear and I can't up load them, OH said he would try tonight.

I'm no expert but to me they sounds like they're eating the poop but weren't actually passed by Bo. Don't worry - I'm sure Gill would have identified them if they'd been something that could live inside your horse.

They are just little beetles from the groud not that are passed, I see them whilst poo picking too.. I did wonder at first but they are just beetles:)

Oh these were no beetles, no legs just very larve looking things, I am happy to conclude that they are not from in my horse but if they could be ingested making our current worm free existance a rather more gruesome one or if they are fly larve I would like to spray or something to kill them off now rather than wait till its a problem :D

Hello Jessey, don't worry they will not be out of your horse. Nature has an economical way of using up waste as food and housing for other creatures, all part of her tidying up process!
