I agree, it's rubbish. Saff's injured at the moment and I'm trying to keep her out in the field and the flies off her legs which is no mean feat. So far I haven't found anything that works. Naf is crap. Global Herbs is slightly better but not wonderful, especially as it costs a bloody fortune :(
What's the name of the Avon stuff that's supposed to be good?

Avon Skin-So-Soft & Fresh (used to be Woodland Fresh I think). Apparently you can use any product from that range in that fragrance, but I went for the dry oil body spray (got 2 for £4 on offer) and it works really well, so I chucked away the home made gunk I'd been struggling with and am sticking with that!

doesn't work and the free fringe is also rubbish, its certainly not cob sized as it states and it faded within a week of being used.
I like the Leovet Fly-b-gone. Or the net-tex fly repellent. The IV Horse fly repellent cream is also very good.

its total rubbish ! my mare is off work from coming out in huge lumps all over her belly from a fly bite after using the stuff.
Used to use avon skin so soft ( v good for sweet itch too), will be ordering bucket -full off net.

Hey there, i use it on my highland mare and it does work on her face, but around her bum and bits its not so powerful.. but i do like how it has garlic in it and the handy fly mask is a bonus.

Thanks David, I didn't know that :)
I also agree about the fly fringe! Saff wasn't impressed by it anyway and when I came back to her after doing some deragworting of the field she'd rubbed one end off so it was lying vertically down her face . I guess she doesn't want a fly fringe on ... or maybe it's the colour, she's not a girly girl.

Cisco is allergic to fly sprays with pyrethrin and permyrethrin. They make his hair fall out and he gets very red skin. I've been using Avon Skin-So-Soft bath oil mixed with water. It work great and he smells like a baby.

Since citronella seems to be the only really effective repellent, it's a good thing we'll still be able to get the oil from the pharmacy. Otherwise, can you imagine the untold suffering on thousands of sweet-itchy ponies and horses? Tantamount to cruelty, banning the stuff! The only plus point, is that if really nothing else works, the manufacturers probably will shell out the money for the study required to get it legal again - 'cause we'll all be making our own, and they won't be able to sell their useless citronella-free fly sprays at all!

Have you tried adding Neem oil to your home-made fly repellent? try this:
*Neem oil with eucalyptus oil, lavender oil, tea tree oil, bog myrtle oil and a few drops of geranium oil. dilute all in a litre of water with a few drops of washing up liquid as surfactant - helps to disperse the oils.
I also use lemongrass, cironella, eucalpytus and neem around 20 drops of each in same dilution as above.

This (http://avonshop.co.uk/avonshop/default.asp?rep_phone=&rep_email=&newdept=&s=Google&c=Keywords&otc=Keyword_GoogleKWGavon&omn_referrer=http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=avon&meta=&department=Keyword_GoogleKWG) is the Avon UK site.
If you key in "skin-so-soft" as a search term in the bottom right corner, the bath oil is item no. 8 on page 1, and the dry oil spray is item no. 17 on page 2.
Edit: Sorry W'jit, cross posted!

I use the dry oil spray neat. I wasn't sure how well it would water down, and I don't need to use much anyway. I just do a few spritzes around the base of his tail, under his belly, and up his neck. Works a treat ;)
I think the people who use the bath oil water it down.
I know it sounds weird, but Merrick's not half so bothered by flies as the other horses. He was quite bad last summer when we used normal fly repellents and we had to borrow a fly rug for him as he was covered in swellings and lumps. But this year with the Avon he just has his fly mask like always and seems fine :)

x.sarah.x,
I've never used the dry spray, but I use the Skin-So-Soft bath oil mixed with water. It smells similar to Johnson's Baby Oil or other newborn baby products. I knew Skin-So-Soft repelled bugs and mosquitoes for years. 20 years ago on a camping trip I saw a mosquito land on a bottle of the bath oil and die there. I've used it ever since. Years ago they also started marketing Skin-So-Soft bug repellants.
They also list a horse fly spray recipe on their web site. Here it is
Recipe For Horse Spray (for flies)
Contributed by: Pat Benedict -Avon Representative in Florida
Email
1 oz Citronella Oil
2 oz Skin-So-Soft Bath Oil
1 cup Vinegar
1 cup Water
I mentioned on the first page of this thread that Cisco is allergic to the usual fly sprays. They make his hair fall out. Skin-So-Soft just gives him a shiny coat, so I love it!

Just bought some of the dry oil spray - ugh it smells horrible - I had thought to use it on myself because there is a mozzie problem around where I live, but I think I'd rather have the bites!
Anyway, reading the label, it lists hydroxycitronellai and citronellol among the ingredients, so I'm guessing they're the things the flies don't like - any chemists on the boards who can decode these ingredients for us?
I'll give it a shot this evening (I only have to get over the slight difficulty that the mare hates squirty sprays and will probably run a mile when she smells it).

I've found a mix of vinegar, dishwashing liquid and water makes a really good fly repellant. It does smell pretty foul to be honest but it kept the flys off my girl whos allergic to fly bites
