It should say on you test to leave the arena at A on a long rein at walk. I usually walk forward a few strides after the halt, and then turn towards E, up the track a bit, cut out the corner towards A and leave the arena that way. :)
Don't wait for the judge to tell you to leave. She/he will just end up smiling at you like you're a crazy person frozen solid in his/her arena! ;)

you dont need to leave at A anymore. The new dressage sheets just say leave the arena at a suitable place. If there are solid boards all around except at A, then dont go jumping them, walk to A - but if there are gaps between the boards then you can just walk forwards from your halt and exit via the nearest gap.

I've looked at the Australian Dressage Rules here:
http://www.efanational.com/site/equestrian/national/downloads/content/attachments/rules/dressage/2004_Dressage_Rules_v8_with_index_sec.pdf
and some of the tests here:

The tests say after the final halt to leave the arena at A in walk on a long rein.
I can't find anything to qualify this instruction in the rules. The British Dressage rules allow you to leave at a convenient point in the arena if there are gaps in the boards.
I suggest you check with your federation to find out exactly what you can and can't do.

Interesting! I've never been in an arena that has gaps anywhere other than A. our New Zealand rules (NZEF) state that you must leave the arena at A.

I think the BD rules came in so they could get a higher turnover of people going through the arena. You can now be penalised if you don't leave the arena at the nearest convenient point.
Cochise: Is there a website with the NZ tests and rules and if there is would you put the link in the sticky at the top of the page. I've tried a google search but can't seem to find anything.

Willingbe, I'll put a link to the NZEF, but you must purchase the dressage test book.
