What does a buddy list do?

I cant remember who I was talking to about this, but what does a buddy list actually do?
Aside from adding a useful '+' to the person's name, of course.

Easier to Pm by clicking on name in buddy list. Ignore list means you dont get to see what that person has wrote on the board

I know the little cross means you've got them on your buddy list but was does the star mean next to your name?

I dont see how you can PM someone directly from the buddy list - can someone explain it to me? I have open buddy list, copy name, open PM then paste name?:confused:
