:)
Hi - folks , need help with a research project... I'm looking into tried and tested products for minor wounds that you would use on your neddies. (I've read all about the general procedure with regards to saline solution..)
All info greatly received - also any info regarding gel-products would be useful.
If anyone can assist or point me in the direction of useful websites then please email me .
Many Thanks in advance Happy New Year to you and your neddies !

What sort of info are you after? I use green oils gel, Sudocrem - good for mud fever!! - antiseptic creams of any sort, purple spray, hibiscrub/teatree oil shampoo - and others I can't remember off the top of my head!! I do have a rather extensive first aid kit for my horse and myself!!:)

I can't remember what catalog it's from, but I use meleluca cream on all my horses' minor cuts and bruises. It works like a charm :)

I use vaseline on his white sock before I turn him out in the muddy field:D
I have sudacreme just incase he does get mud fever:(
Green gel which is brilliant, last used it when my horse got bitten by another and wound powder. Not forgetting the purple spray and dettol.
Can't remember what else is in my black box apart from gamgee, cotton wool and vetrap
:D :D

Hi Ebby
What exactly do you need this research for. I'm currently supposed to be researching the same sort of thing myself for my Horse Owners Course that I'm doing via distance learning. I started this particular module ages ago and haven't really done anything with it yet, due to other committments etc - bad excuse really!! I should just get on with it, complete the module and move on.

One big problem with creams and the like is that once open they can become a breeding ground for more bacteria.
Most medicine cabinets will have all sorts of creams and gels in them but some research showed that once opened and left for a while they can become a cocktail of unplesant bacteria.
You are far better not keeping in such stuff, if the horse gets an injury treat it with salt water or plain, and just keep it clean. If you do open a fresh tube of somethiong keep it no longer than a week then chuck the rest away.
Powders are better as they are dry and do not encourage bacterial growth.
