i have just been discussing beds with Domane......steady on there:eek:
I am the sort that likes a shallow firm one, Domane (until recently) favoured a deep fluffy one........but she has come around to my thinking.
Whats best
Shallow and firm
deep and fluffy
and why.
please ladies, try to keep the answers relative to the way the question was asked. I am getting into trouble for starting threads that end up being, well, slightly off subject:eek:

it depends on what you are using it for....
we have an old chap who is much happier on rubber
My personal preference is clean and crisp - helps with allergies and keeping it clean.
deep and fluffy does keep the draughts out - but is not so easy to keep clean. I think deep and fluffy tends to be more about making the bed-maker feel good than being good for the user.. (IMHO)

At this moment in time.. any sort of bed at all would do as I havent been seeing much of my own recently!
Normally I favour the firm variety.
And breeches, stop pretending you dont want to cause trouble with this! Its pretty off topic anyway..
eta: oh I didnt get it, I'm pretty obsessed with my human bed today. Duchess loves hers deep and fluffy so she can get the maximum amount of shavings into her mane and ears... She thinks it looks pretty! Werner just thinks lying down is for girls!

I like A shallower bed as easier to keep control of. I tended to deeplitter, muck out daily and clean out wet once a week as was suitable for me.

Undoubtedly Breeches means Horsey beds... Domane and I were only discussing the very same subject on Saturday;)
I too have rubber mats but like to see a 'shake' of straw over them, and I have shavings 'banks' round the edges too:rolleyes:

ummmm... i'm starting to think that fits has the measure of you, breeches :D
to answer the question-
deep litter-warm in winter, good for oldies with stiffness, hard, smelly work to muck out, will stink if not careful, will make horse stink, horse will have lovely stable stains and may get fed up of breathing stink.
not deep litter-easier to keep clean, uses more bedding, not warm in winter
not deep litter with rubber matting-pee gets under mats and stinks-hard smelly work cleaning under mats, use less beding, nice and soft for neddies night time repose.
six of one half a dozen of the other in my humble opinion

JOHN!!! Stoppit now!
I think all this banking malarkey is daft.... especially when it's to stop them getting cast.... it would have to be pretty sizeable and well packed to stop a large horse from squishing it down. I did fall into the trap of banking when I first started... I would put the fresh straw round the edges (yeeees, in "banks) and use "yesterday's clean" in the middle but I found that Cherry just pees and poops wherever her backend happens to be so often I was chucking out more new than old. Now she just gets an even covering to absorb the pee and it takes me much less time and effort.

i'll fight you for him :p ;)
Twig's bed usually gets made more often than mine  Thick and fluffy is usually the way to go. Last year he had to be deep littered during the week due to college and work getting in the way of my mucking out time. This year he will be mucked out every day so thinking about rubber mats and possibly changing to shavings

I am thinking of entering my deep litter into the Guiness book of records - it is two years old now - It has also housed a few cows - the stables are used as calving/ intensive care units in the summer.
It is actually old as the wee pony gets laminitis as soon as the sun shines - so she stays inside in the summer - the bouncy straw on a deep base saved her feet this summer... But as she is in residence I can't get the 'volunteers' to help me muck it out.
I have to add that this stable is so big it takes 3/4 of a big bale of straw to cover it in a decent depth of straw- so deep litter is the only option. And the ponies love it - they rush inside to pee in it given the chance. So put me down on hte deep and bouncy side of the list........
(as for human beds - mine is 7 ft square - and it sometimes feels like there is 3/4 of a big bale in it!!!!!!!)
P.S. - as you can't change gravity you will have to put the door on the other side of the stable - or reskim the floor so gravity works with you !!!

I too have just got into rubber, and deep shavings too, my boy has suffered for years with stables stains, and since i have owned him, i have been working on this problem and it seems rubber matting and shavings is the answer he was so clean i almost fell in the floor, not that he is impressed as he can't eat his bed now, although he did try and had a mouthful of shavings and promptly wiped them all over me
I have had to sacrifice my kisses as he his upset with me over the bedding
