Fastening the cinch (girth)

I've only been using a western saddle for a short time, my friend (who owns the saddle) has normally tacked up - I have watched, but we're normally gassing, has always tucked up the remainder of the strap.

What's the correct way to secure the remainder of the strap?

I believe that on many Western saddles, there is a small slot cut in a small strip of leather to your upper left. The remaining cinch goes loosely thru there. Hope this helps!:)
