I dont know about you but my thighs and hip joints are giving me greif at the moment.:(
I am walking a little bandy legged, a little Charlie Chaplin/ John Wayne.

Is there anything anyone can recomend, i ride every morning so i thought i would get used to it by now, but each afternoon, it feels like someone has stuffed a beach ball between my old pins, its not right........

I dont need any refrence to age....we are all of a mature stature, so there is no need to be personal.

Lol well I'm only 21 and in agony. I've been ill so haven't rode much recently. Went out on Tuesday had a few good canters (and fell off) and honestly I can hardly walk!! You know that pain you get at the top of your legs I haven't felt this since I started riding!!

Hmmm..... I have heard that a certain "friend of a bear who's first name is Winnie" around these boards (;) )who doesn't just treat equines with his Bowen's therapy.... HairyCob is very much a convert since her hip was given his best treatment. If you book him for Rosie, perhaps you can have a session too?

This is too spooky ... on the last three occasions I've logged on to post something I find someone has just the same post already there:confused:
This time it's your thighs Breeches ... well, my thighs too. They feel, and sound , as if they're about to dislocate when I lift my leg up high ...
... and my knees are clicking too:eek:   This has only happened since I started riding Bill . It's reassuring to find I'm not the only one who's shortly going to need triple joint replacement ... or will it get better?????

you could try taking glucosomine - my hip got really sore when I had to use a whole lot of leg (alot) at the riding school on one stibborn horse and I started taking it and it just came right after a while. Think the muscles and tendons and ligaments (and bones to some degree) have to get stronger - just like horses. It can take only a few weeks to strengthen muscles but months or years to strengthen ligaments and tendons - horses and humans. :o The glucosomine helps the joints (should help with the clicking)

do you do *anything* other than riding that would help with joint flexability and suppleness ?

I remember going to a John Lasseter demo where he showed how flexible his hip joints were - amazing range of movement !

But if you're still that sore, I'd recommend finding stretches etc to help work on flexibility. Even if a class is too girlie for you (yoga would be good), then there are plenty of good descriptions on the web these days. Some of the magazines have had articles on it as well. And I know there are videos and posters etc for exercises for riders....

that may be an idea, i am quite fit (ish) do a fair bit of excercise , but its not stretching. i dont mind the girlie thing, would object to wearing lycra, but a tums and bums session could be handy, thanks

It might be that you are not compleatly relaxed when riding, and this tention is causing muscle pain.

As cvb said, yoga could be good or maybe Ti Chi or kung fu (both of which have a lots of leg excercisis in them).

Also have you considered canging the length you have your stirups at? I know that when I ride Katie (who is 16.2hh) I need to have the stirups shorter than normal other wise I feel a bit errrm well a bit streached as she is quite round at the moment.

breeches - watch its not about toning and tightening, you want supple and flexible !

One simple DIY exercise. Stand somewhere you can lean a hand on a wall or rail or chair for support. Stand one one leg and gently swing it - firstly across the other leg (in front), and then out and up.

Now - one test is to do this without tipping your hips. Keep them level and even. How far will your leg go up and out. The leg needs to stay parallel as well, no taking it back or forward...

Now try again but this time give yourself a bit more range by allowing your hip to tip with it (that way you are actually working *both* joints). Don't "bounce" or force the swing, take it fast enough its a comfortable movement, repeat a couple of times and change side.

The other one is the classic stretch sitting on the floor.

Sit on the floor with your legs out in front of you. First question is whether you can actually sit tall and upright with your legs together and in front ? if not, you may need to use one hand to prop you up and lean back very slightly.

Now. From facing forward position, you can either

- take both legs outwards as far as is comfortable and is not (at this stage) a strain. Now rotate at the waist to face one leg and slowly run your hands down the leg as far as you go, breathing out as you do so. Hold for a second and come back (breath in). Repeat and see if you can go further. Come back up, rotate at waist to face the other leg, repeat. Straighten up and rotate so you are facing front again and run you hands down the floor in the middle as far as you can.

- or you do above but bend the knee on the "other" leg so your foot comes in against the thigh of the straight leg. Change the bent leg when you change sides.

There are probably better descriptions of this online from properly qualified sports training people !

is bowen any good for scoliosis ? If so, I have between now and sometime in August to convince my mum. I was watching her walk the other day and the sideways displacement was more obvious than I have seen it before. I know she's not getting any younger, but if something could help....

i'm keen to get my mum a bowen session too cvb, she has hip problems.
don't know if there are any bowen practitioners in N.Wales though, will haveto investigate.
she's having acupuncture atm which is definately helping, which is a relief for us.

nah, but don't sneeze with your eyes open or your eyeballs will fall out.. :p Seriously, I don't know what to suggest seeing as you ride daily. I went on a 2 hour (ish) hack yesterday and my thighs and rear didn't half feel it!:p I ride every day too - seems that when you get past a certain age it doesn't matter how much you exercise, you're just not that bendy anymore.......:D

dodgey aching limbs no more, i have found a quick slap with a damp copy of horse and hound around the painfull areas does the trick, its a bit embarrasing asking someone to do it and it leaves a reverse image of the front cover on you, but its worth it:D
