I have always ridden and have a couple of horses out on loan at the moment, and was thrilled when my husband decided to take up riding so that we have them home and enjoy riding together.

He had a very very good first lesson, his sitting trot is amazingly good, but he has an issue with rising trot, and found it impossibly painful. I was wondering if any male riders have any underwear recommendations or hints as to what he can do about this :o

I am sorry that my first post here is so delicate (no pun intended) but really hope somebody has an answer to this. :)

Have asked OH this before as somebody else on here asked - the answer TIGHT BOXER SHORTS - VERY STRETCHY ONES!!!:D but TIGHT fitting.

Edited to add: OH says the pain goes after a while, his n**s were sore for a while, but you just get over it!!!!

Oh dear. That's what he was wearing.
Oh, well, he'll have to work through the pain then, LOL. He did love it, despite the agony, and like a pony mad kid has been talking about the cob he rode NON STOP this week.

My hubby never wears his boxers for riding, he has snug fitting pants.

I think it's also a matter of balance, so it should improve with lessons, I know it's delicate if his instructor is female but he might want to mention it and see if he can get any help with his seat.

The type of saddle can make a big difference to comfort. I tried the SLK High head which nearly crippled me but the low head was fine with no problems. Check to make sure the saddle is fitted properley and not up at the front

Yes, I think he will have to mention it, and I am sure once he has mastered rising trot he'll be ok. Its just hard for him to concentrate when he is in such pain! His sitting trot is so good though, you would think from his seat he had ben riding for ages......its pay back for being so good at that that he has the other issue!

Thanks for all your help!

has he tried cycling shorts under his trousers ? the strategic padding and support may help.

Thanks, i'll suggest that to him.

What about a seat saver, I have never used one, but does anybody think that would help? He could take his own to the stables and then put it on whichever horse he is assigned to.

My husband tried the cycling shorts last time we were out and he said it was worse. Best thing he's found so far is loose boxers - let it all find its own place to lie rather than try to bunch it up out of the way.

Old fashioned Y-Fronts used to be called "Jockeys" (by the manufacturer). This could be an indication of their success in this quarter - or not..... Have you thought about enquiring of a company/shop supplying jockeys?
