Ok, recently i have started to have to use a dressage whip. Brr..the thought. Im not one for whips or crops, but it certainly makes Toby pay attention. I dont necassarily have to use it, just hold it and he knows i have it so he straightens up and is very cooperative.
Anywho, i carry the whip in my right hand, but that is also the hand in which i salute with. What i cant figure out is how your supposed to salute with a whip in your hand? Should i set it in my other hand for the salute or salute with it in my hand? Im a bit confused, can you tell? lol.
So, the question you really need to answer is "How do you salute with a whip in your hand?"

Let's see, you can either A.)Switch your whip or B.)Salute with the other hand :p :p
I would not salute with a whip in my hand, me being a clumsy person I would probably end up banging it on something on my hands' way down and drop it during my Dressage test :D
I've only ever seen women salute with their right hand though, so I would switch the whip. Or you could quickly grab the whip in your left hand for the salute(not switching the whips' side) and then pick it back up again when you get your reins.

I don't think there is a rule which hand you salute with, I always salute with the hand without the whip.
Generally, when you use a whip while riding, you switch sides depending on what you need it for. I enter the arena with it in the hand I will need it first, and then I salute with the other hand.
You shouldn't shudder about riding with a whip. You shouldn't be using it in a forceful way. It's a light tap or a quick tap, tap, tap. Nothing more severe than using any other aid.

you must not salute with the whip in your hand - that's against the rules. you shouldn't swap your whip over during the test either - it interrupts the contact and looks messy - just keep it in the hand you need it most.
you have 2 options - salute with your left hand (which I do and there is absolutely nothing wrong with) or just grab the end of the whip in your left hand and salute with your right. you dont need to swap the whip over, just keep it on the same side and grab hold of the end of it with your left hand.

I was taught by my dressage instructor that you should carry the whip on the inside. So that means you should swap the whip to your inside hand as you change diagonals.
You shouldn't salute with the whip in your hand, and you should always salute with the right hand. What I do in practice is if the whip needs to be in my right hand, I pass the whip into my left hand briefly for the salute (but leave it laying over the horses right hand side) and then pass the whip into my right hand again as I retake the reins.

that's all very well at home and is correct - when schooling you should swap the whip into the inside hand all the time, but you should not do that in a dressage test - i've never seen anyone swapping their whip over at affiliated and those i've seen do it at unaffiliated it does not look good - the contact is lost, it looks messy and it really isn't necessary.

I always carry my whip in right hand during tests, then pick it up with my reins in my left hand and salute with my empty right hand. It is against the rules to salute with your whip in your hand.
It is correct to have your whip in your inside hand whilst schooling but sometimes it is more effective in your ourside if thats where you need it most. It is only to back up your leg if the horse is not listening not to punish him with sometimes whilst schooling if your horse is going well it is less effective to pass your whip to the inside as it hinders your way of going, whilst youre fidderling about!!!

as a left handed person I've never had (or even known there was) a dilemma. This has to be the only time being left handed has been an asset!

yeah same, at home when am riding i'd swap it over but never in the middle of a dressage test. So yeah, if its in your right hand, when your putting both reins in the left to salute just put the whip in that hand too & salute with your right. :)

An interesting pondering we had today connected to this thread spookily, should have thought to ask Mal when we where at the showground.
Is it actually technically correct to salute with your whip hand if you hold it with the reins in the other hand? Or should you not salute the side your carrying the whip at all?
I know not to salute with the whip in the hand (not that I carry one) otherwise thats a penalty, but I think it looks shoddy to salute with say your right hand thats holding the whip by putting the whip in the left hand along with the reins.
Will have to ask on this, not that it applies to me, but applies to friends, but they always salute with the opposite hand anyway.

doesn't matter - what is technically correct is to use either hand to make a salute - doesn't matter which as long as you dont take the whip with it.

Star - yes I understand that bit, however I feel personally that doing it for example with the right hand which was holding the whip and placing the reins and whip in the left hand (still having the whip over the horses right shoulder) is wrong, whether or not its wrong in the rules is another matter, just my opinion on what looks 'correct'.
Mal's view on the salute to help anyone out thats unsure.
Star has it right.
Reins in both hands into a square balanced halt. Whip hand accepts
both
reins, maintaining a light, even contact to the bit to retain the
attentive halt.
Free hand dropped to the side, nodding the head to salute the judge.
(The judge will normally return the salute, but it may be after the
competitor has completed theirs. Judge needs to assess the passivity
and attentiveness of the horse at all times, so don't feel slighted if
the judge doesn't immediately return the salute. The duration of
judging is from the entry at A to departure from the final salute.)

Whilst schooling yes change the whip over to the inside hand but I got roundly told off for trying to swop it over whilst running through a test with my instructor :o She said to put it in whichever hand I prefer - I usually put it in whichever hand will be on the inside first and leave it there and then salute with the free hand.
I didn't know that the judges generally return the salute MeMe - but then I don't ride in my glasses so I guess it's all a bit blurry anyway!!

It depends on the judge if they return the salute, if you get a nice one they will smile or nod but that doesnt always happen.
It doesnt overly look untidy if you salute with the same side as your whip is very thin as it is a schooling whip and i must admit to not getting penalised at the regionals at Elementary doing that and being in the places!!!!!!!!!!!
I am right handed and you dont move the whip by picking it up in your left hand at all. It should be across your thigh out of the way anyhow!!!
