hi guys, well as you all probably know, DDJ may be pinching Drummer off me next year. i am trying to quit smoking as we speak as i need more cash :)

as a single parent i may have 2 liveries to pay for next year, £24 per horse, per week and lessons on top of this. i did it last year before we sold my daughters pony, and it was tough.

kinda thinking it is ok with one horse, but need to raise spare cash for two if i can quit smoking that will save me £40 per month that is nearly 2 weeks livery, i also have 2 lessons a week and im happy to have 1 of my lessons every other week making another saving of £34 - this is nearly my livery for another horse a month :) DDJ has also been told that at 14 years old she has to go and sweep floors on a saturday in a hairdressers and pay for her lesson a week  nasty mom :)

the initial cost of the new horse next year is ok, just the keeping of it. i can hack to the vets so vaccinations are not so bad, drummer gets shoes every 3 MONTHS  so if new horse is like this that would be fab, my bates saddle should fit new horse and DDJ would prefer smaller synthetic one and sure drummer wont complain of the lightness either, so tack should be ok

next dilema.........transport!!!!!!!!!! i was getting a single ifa williams next year to two drummer with my large car, cant tow 2 or a double trailer

options..........(unless you guys have any other thoughts, breeches you may be able to help here) i can only drive an automatic (makes every option more expensive) and i am also on mobility car hire scheme, i have £145 per month to play with, options hire/lease 4x4 although dont think £145 will cover this esp an auto, ditch nice big car and get small cheap run around and get something like a ford transit 2 horse van auto and hope that the difference from having a cheap run around from the £145 may pay for lorries maintenance and insurance but need to pay for initial outlay of lorry be about 10,000  .........any views, thoughts, info - the cheapest affordable way to go about this. i believe to do a 4x4 on motability scheme which would be the best option requires something like a 3 -4000 deposit which i dont get back after 3 years (kinda feels id be chucking money away)

thanks guys and thanks for reading through the above rambling :)

Having played the 4x4 and trailer game for a number of years now and converted to a 7.5 ton lorry and small car I can honestly say I find it cheaper to run small car and lorry than the 4x4. I average around 15,000 miles per year. Add in the convenience of a lorry and the living etc and there is NO WAY I will vere go back to a trailer.

even against the maintenence and insurance (i expect 4x4 insurance is high anyway) - dont think a ford transit would have living quaters :) and also things like, not really being used or started up in the winter

Yep anything 4x4 is expensive - insurance, parts, tyres, exhaust petrol consumption etc.

No harm in starting the lorry once a week during the winter.

You can get 3.5 ton with small day living. Once you have a lorry you will be surprised how much you compete in the winter ;)

ok thanks DH
ps still not smoking, agony but will be worth it :) reckon me and DDJ can squeeze one more into our family, even the four legged kind :)

mmm think there are quite a few indoor sj comps around us in the winter

We went from a trailer to a 3.5tonne lorry with living and its fab. Used to hate the trailer, the whole thing from hitching up to driving it. The lorry is great, my other half bought it for my birthday last year thinking I wouldnt use it but I do. Happy to just shove ponies in and go off to shows etc single handed.
Dont forget insurance costs though
Yes the not using it for weeks and forgetting to start it is an issue but we just bought a heavy duty set of jump leads and stick them in the cab ready!
