I have recently purchased a Hanoverian mare for what everyone seems to feel is a bargain price for a pink papered branded horse. I have her passport and hence know her full breeding. Just wondering if anyone is particulary knowledgeable in this area and if I were to give them details of the breeding/details about her they could give be an idea of her value for the purpose of her insurance cover.
Thanks in advance.

breeding is only of particular value though, if the mare herself is good enough to breed from. if she has the best lineage in the world but has terrible conformation herself, for instance, or temperament/physical problems that mean she wouldn't breed or compete, then her breeding is irrelevant.
it could well be she was cheap for a reason - perhaps she was meant to go on to top-flight compeition and didn't have the talent, or had an accident and lost her nerve or something.
did the sellers say why she was so cheap?

Thanks. I have her passport which includes her last four generations. I've been told she has good bloodlines but just wondered if with this info anyone could give me an idea of her value.
She is 9 yrs ols, 16.2h, liver chestnut. She was working at medium level dressage prior to having a bump to her hock last year. She is fully recovered/sound now and is being brought upto full fitness at the moment.
Her Sire is Welt Hit I 0 (Weltmeyer x Celeste) and her Dam is the State Premium Mare Walencia (World Cup I x Atlantis). She is pink papered.
Just wanted an idea of her value for insurance purposes.
Thanks Emma.

The last owner had fallen into financial difficulties and owned the YO a sum of money and this is the amount that she wanted to sell the mare for to get a quick sale.
To be honest I don't think that she knew what she was selling. She was advisertised as a Hanoverian cross. She is pink papered and branded. Last owner thought she was a cross as Welt Hit I 0 is Oldenburg and I don't think she realised that he is granded with the Hanoverian Society.
At the time of viewing her etc she gave be her passport and said something along the lines of - 'it's prob not much good. I can't make head nor tail of it as it's in German' My mare was bred, foaled, broken and her initial schooling was carried out in Germany - hence she has a passport which was issued in German.

On her passport her registered name is Windrose although nothing in the FEI name section.
I know that she was being competed but I don't know who by. Had a look on British Dressage and cannot find anything for a horse of that name.
I have an instructor working with her at the moment and she has commented that she fully believes that she was working at medium level and should do ago and most poeple have commented that she has fantastic paces.
Now all I need to do is find someone to hopefully compete her. (She is my far more advanced than my riding abilities!) Someone at my yard has offered to assist - she was taught to ride in Germany and is a very talented rider. Only prob is she has a 5yr old that she is bringing on and I know that her time is precious.

Oh forgot to add I bought her for only £1250.00. Everyone has suggested that this was very much a bargain. I don't know how much she is worth so don't know how much to insure her for.
I've tried to find similar horses for sale to get an idea but haven't found anything close yet.

Congratulations :D - sounds likely got a total bargain :D
You'll probably want to get her valued and vetted (if you haven't already). You can only insure a horse without a 5 star vetting for upto around £5,000 - I'm guessing your mare may well be worth more than that :) - grab a copy of Horse and Hound and have a look at the adds. My guess (from memory) is that comparable horses will be going for anywhere between 5k and 15k, with no obvious difference between them!
Value is usually taken as purchase price. If you want to insure for more than that, you need to be able to give a good reason why, and probably provide a qualified opinion (probably and instructor, but possibly not yours ;)) that confirms the value you're asking to insure.
Best bet is to give a few insurance companies a call and see what their requirements would be.

Wow....£1250 ????
That's crazy if she's worked once at Medium Level ??? Has she changed ownership that much ??? What did the previous owner do with her ??
My last horse was a hanovarian cross...He had Wagner and Weltmeyer Lines. I picked him up for £1000 !!! - He was only 5 !!! Very Tempermental though....I wouldn't buy one again.
Let us know how you get on.

i should say it was a bargain;) my gelding is from the same line he has Waldhorn, and wendepunkt in his pedigree, and you cannot fault his temprement.
he came over from germany as a foal at foot. i paid £5000.00 for him in 1994 as a 5 year old.:(
good luck with the mare, are you going to breed from her?

Hoping to breed from her next year. Just trying to choose a suitable stallion. This year we are concentrating on getting her to full fitness and competing towards the end of the season.

Well bred on both dam and sire line.
Working medium or competing Medium?
If she has Medium level points and has a record at that level and would pass the vet you could easily get £10 - £15K, if she has a record at regionals level possibly more. If she has potential to go to FEI level (and with that breeding she should do) she could go for more. Insurance -wise you would need the 5* vetting and her competition record if you went for values that high. From a practical point of view you could do what I do - insure to buy a youngster of similar breeding/potential which would be around £5 - 10K
If you contact BD direct they may be able to ID her, particularly as she was imported - if imported after 3yo they get allocated points automatically.
